Ditch the fucking combo weapons and vehicles.
Or only keep the more "sensible shit" like nailed bats, or knives on gloves.
Bring back the timer, and design the game around it so that it's very challenging to do every mission, but possible like the first two games.
Remove the shitty RPG skill tree garbage. Or only make you choose basic stats like, speed, throw distance.
Remove the shitty, combo x times to do "supermove" y garbage.
Make a smaller more condensed map with unique shortcuts, shops and venues to memorize than some large big map with no character to it.
Basically undo fucking everything the cancer 3 started.
Remove it from the fucking Canadians.

Make the first game story/tone with the controls of the second game

American malls are fucking gay, I'd set it in an Asian multi-story megamall in Hong Kong or something. There's one in Malaysia where a couple of the floors are a fucking amusement park. For once have verticality and shit be a focus in the series.

Instead of focusing on being a musou with crazy kill combos, have a focus go back to improvising weapons and finding the best routes and secret areas. Combo weapons can stay, but make them into either rare and special weapons or slapdash axe-hammer-duct tape shit like in DR2.

Sandbox mode from OTR, bring back psychos and escorting survivors to safety (with improved DR2 survivor AI) BUT keep the change in DR3 where not every side mission ends in escorting survivors, sometimes the survivors can handle themselves so escorting is only sometimes.

Or set the game in Japan. Things like Highschool of the Dead and I Am A Hero made me think about how interesting exploring Japanese suburbs and city areas would be in a sandbox zombie apocalypse game. The tight alleyways, shops close together, the short suburb walls and hilly surroundings. I'm fucking sick of "hurr durr middle America suburbia zombie driving simulator" games.

It's a very hard thing to do, but they need to avoid both making it too serious or to wacky.

Ideally they need to create something that at its core is fairly generic, but has enough options to be fucking mental, but at the discretion of the player.

Basically, don't make it silly, just allow it to be silly.

It's mainly to silence the fucking babies that always whinge about the timer without adding much extra effort. Infinity mode had problems, didn't you need to like leave your console on for hours to get the achievement and unlock the lightsaber or something like that in the first game?

I mean really you could have both, extra modes aren't a difficult thing to program. A sandbox mode which is just dicking around with no timer, and a survival mode where you got a hunger meter and it's more difficult cuz you gotta survive. Bring in roguelike elements in the infinity survival mode, randomized item placement, random psycho/survivor spawns, maybe random character upgrades each run, just add some replayability to it cuz I always felt Dead Rising games worked as decent hack n slash games too.

Drop the American setting and set it in an alternate timeline. Frank West in covering a war in a slavic country in the 90s (like Bosnia or some shit) when shit goes south with zombie hordes. Have it set in a large city where most of the building are enterable and firearms are getting more and more scarce. Give it over-the-top slavic sterotypes for psychos, a small base-building minigame where you try to rebuild a few areas for survivors, and instead of a timer give it a night/day cycle that lets the zombies turn from shamblers into runners.

a completely serious story line with huge emotional impact while at the same time the player can break immersion by still doing all of the stupid and silly stuff around the mall. that's it, have the game take itself too seriously, that's what makes it good.

gameplay wise, less craftable weapons.

Ehhhh, its kind of hit or miss for me.

Personally, I am fine with how it was done in DR2 where they felt a lot more rare to get and you did not have a magic regenerating closet of items like DR3. The other problem is the series has gotten so ridiculous about zombie count/health that normal weapons became impractical in DR3 and beyond.

But not to derail the thread more;
I reckon the best course of action for the series would definitely be to return back to DR1 style, with some of the sequel's influences. Excluding DR4 coz fuck DR4.
A new character, or a secondary character taking the lead role. Leave Frank/Chuck/Nick as just references in dialogue. None of that bullshit, "CHUCK'S BACK BABY" from DR3 (as much as I enjoyed DR3, the story was fucking shit)
Streamline the gameplay to be about the weapons again, with minimal car shit. More akin to DR2.
I don't know, just fucking remake DR1 with some elements from DR2.

I liked them in DR2 where they were special things you could make, and they had that makeshift slapdash feel. Duct taping an axe and sledgehammer together to get something slower than both but way more powerful, that sorta thing I liked.

DR3 made them really silly and they pretty much broke the game, the reaper scythe is straight out of a musou game. But the whole game was more action oriented and I kinda liked that you didn't need a workbench, it encouraged heavier combo weapon use rather than filling your inventory with materials that you otherwise won't use until you find a workbench. Also the weapons often had interesting movesets and were pretty varied.

DR4 just sucks. There's fewer combo weapons, you only need one specific item and any of [class] of items, what's there is either boring (fire sword, acid hammer, lightning axe) or too far in the nonsensical (the fucking gnome wand).

I would love for combo weapons to stay but either make them interesting like in DR3 or make them makeshift weapons like in DR2.

Already have DR3, played both kinds of 2 on console to death. Resident Evils I've all played/own already.

I bought it for the minimum $1 for DmC and Strider. Also Umbrella Chronicles for shits n giggles but guess what fucking happened when I went to redeem.

Honestly, if it had DR1 I would consider paying more for it. It's still the best in the series for having the best setting and story. The fucking canucks pushed too hard on the silly and ignored everything else good about the first game.
