The music accompanied with the some of the scenes really makes the experience a lot more compelling. Add that onto the (sometimes) good VA's and it makes a really nice experience.

I can only believe it's the latter. The consensus seems to be that Kasumi's route is a slog and so is Kei's until the last chapter (I didn't feel impressed by it either). Marie's and Rea's route are better, but I'm not sure if it would justify the fame the novel got.

I mean, I really liked it , but I can say that that's because it did a lot of things that impressed me, but which were not necessarily outstanding.

When you think about the greater implications of the society that exists in the world of Nekopara, it actually gets rather dark. They touch on it a little bit in Volume 3, but consider you have a sentient race of catgirls (and theoretically catboys) which are literally second class citizens. They grow to maturity in around a year both mentally and physically. There is no way there aren't entire brothels with nothing but catgirls chained up and being used for sex slaves. They can't be impregnated by humans and since they aren't people, they don't have human rights.
They never mention it, but how old does a catgirl live? Standard cat age of around 10-20 years? Anyway, lots of things that they just don't explore because the game is about giving you cute catgirls to masturbate to.

It's probably just not for you. I think DI is an extremely polarizing VN, it's the kind of thing you either love for the characters and all the little details, literary allusions, and references that you can't go a minute without coming across or you will hate it for its very basic and predictable plot and lackluster action sequences.

Personally I had a shitload of fun with it, the plot running parallel to Faust, the Ring Cycles, and Odyssey, seeing how they all intertwine and struggle for superiority oftentimes give a deeper meaning to character interactions and ideologies especially impressed me, but I can definitely see how it's not for everyone.

The Opera Rusalka (as the Siren/Witch/Nymph who wanted love but was betrayed.)
The Opera Anna Bolena (as the "star that has already set", the "sacrifice".)
The Opera Maria Stuarda (persecuted as a witch, executed by the hand that she had hoped would save her.)

And then of course her role in the trinity of stories competing to color the cosmos with their craving:
Reinhard's Story - The Ring Cycle (Rusalka serves the role of the Rheinmaidens, also a water spirit like Rusalka)

The final choice in Rea's Epilogue pretty much is "who is your Penelope?"
Odysseus and Penelope are separated for so long that Penelope has to test Odysseus to make sure it is him. Rea says to Ren that she will give him a hard test as well. Penelope tests Odysseus by asking him to have a servant move their bed-- however, Odysseus responds with something only he would know: their bed is made from a live olive tree, it cannot be moved. He passes the test. Similarly, when Ren and Rea meet, Rea blurts out her half of their inside joke about Kumamoto. Ren, recognizing her after the journey responds with his half of the joke, confirming his identity as her Odysseus. And they are reunited.
Unless Ren chooses to go off the script and pursue the other Penelope who has been waiting for his return, Rusalka. In a story about going off the script I found the Rusalka end a really fun option.

It's shit like this that made me really fall in love with DI.

I'm sure you must've already read and enjoyed a story without thinking too much about the text when it was in fact full of interesting references
knowing literature might help you to understand some "hazy" plot points but they are more often than not pretty unconsequential in the grand scheme of things
I myself did read DI without trying to find deep stuff in every single line and still loved it quite a bit.
The characters are amazing and the plot, while predictable, is very self-aware. You may not like it but it will definitely be a fresh experience for you, I believe. One of the very few VNs (along with Hanachirasu, for instance) that's actually original and successful at what it's trying to do.

The common route (like 6-10h long) is free on steam, could give that a shot and see how you like it.
As I mentioned earlier; the plot isn't all that interesting or special, it's all about the characters, their backgrounds, and motivations.
You don't need to be a literature buff to have a good time with it. Being familiar with at the very least Faust, the Ring Cycle, Odyssey, and maybe some very basic Nietzsche adds quite a bit, but a lot of the themes won't be lost on you even if you've never heard of any of those. If you want to compare it to normal video games they are really more like easter eggs in a sense, they are super cool things you can find and spend some time thinking about, but they aren't at all necessary to enjoy and play through the game.

It's made incredibly apparent that Ren's World is modeled after the Odyssey, even moreso than Reinhard's Ring Cycle and Mercurius's Faust.
You'd have to be quite literally blind not to pick up on it throughout the story, and even then Lotus straight up says he will become Odysseus in his final parting words to Reinhard.

I played this game when it first game out on dlsite and even with the porn very little of it was worth a shit, I can't imagine how terrible it is now that it doesn't even have the H content, the only thing it was ever good for was a good laugh at the retarded situations the girls got into
