Turns out, while you had infinite time as a kid, you were also dumb as fuck and had absolutely no idea how to do anything efficiently, and those grindy games that were so difficult hardly require as much of a grind as you thought they once took.
Walking around Henesys picking up ehoes for +1 fame makes the game seem like a massive, impossible grind.

But I won't deny that Nexon is a shit company who has always just wanted you to buy the 2x and 4x XP boosts off the cash shop. Instead now they also force you to buy armour/weapon upgrades to stay competitive.

Runescape is a lot more of a complicated game than maplestory, with a bigger map, more complex stats and a far larger scale economy. Chance is that whatever you were grinding as a 12 year old in maplestory would be what you would be grinding now, the potential for speeding up your progress is very minimal

Beta Maplestory is fucked up. You have to grind for a couple of hours from 5-10 because the quests give fuck all exp and you're not given free potions. This was the one time streamlining was needed.

Plenty of MMOs make it useful to have alts, though not quite to the extent Maplestory did.

In EQ2 you can get exp bonuses from having max level alts (adventure level and crafting level), but yeah that's not much compared to how MS let you give characters bonus stats and completely new skills and passives.

I think a lot of the reward and challenge comes from that "treadmill" stuff you talk about. Maple fell victim to the idea of endgame being the only thing that matters. There's an extreme concentration of bosses that can only be beaten when you're at like level 230+ with really really good gear, but there's also a good amount of content that any level can do, and most of it even scales. Dimensional library/grand athenaeum is a pretty good example. It's four 45 minute-hour long stories about characters in the lore of maplestory, including the black mage, you know, the big bad evil guy who sealed away the heroes, and explains how he came to be. There's the blockbusters like black heaven and heroes of maple that give experience, but are also filled with semi-challenging jump quests (not as hard as the old zakum jq, mind you) and even shmup segments, sliding puzzles, all sorts of good stuff.

The game has more content now, and that means that unfortunately lots of the old stuff is deprecated. Omega sector, for example. It just got revamped about 6 months ago, from a level 70 area that no one visited because it was out of the way and you get to level 150 in a matter of days if not hours on GMS where you can just buy 4x exp, to a level 170+ one, where it's now a theme dungeon with it's own short storyline, unique rewards, a cool boss, and some other shit.

The game moved away from the incessant grind (unless you want to get to 250, good luck. It's the old pre-bb 1-200 grind times... I think it was 120 or so, to get from 201-250.) and to trying to make every bit of fondly remembered content retain some of it's value instead of just rotting away. They're taking steps to improve that sort of stuff. Day late and a dollar short? Sure. But they're trying. Better than I can say for a lot of companies.

Absolutely. I don't blame you at all. I just keep playing because i've been playing for over a decade now, playing the jap and KR servers for about 8. Lots of quality of life improvements. And the KR version has always been lightyears ahead of GMS/global in regards to bot stopping measures and lack of p2w. There's no buyable 2x exp coupons, you can just use mesos to get maple points and buy cubes to reroll your stuff (or just make your own), and whatnot. It's a lot more tolerable. I haven't spent a penny on KMS ever, and I don't ever intend to, and I can still play with the big boys on my main characters because of it.
But yeah, I totally get why people dislike post big bang maple. It's why I don't make a stink about people playing whatever, or not playing at all, I just bump the threads cause it's nice to talk to people who had fond memories every now and then, and show off some of the new shit so people can laugh at it or look on in confusion, whatever.

Maplestory source is notoriously broken and unusable in it's basic state, you have to re-code everything from the ground up to be compatible with your server structure, not to mention add upgrades to make it tolerable like cash items dropping from mobs/cash drops from mobs, travel npcs, all sorts of shit. Royals is the most populated, but as far as /v/ is concerned, it's been there done that. Still a buggy mess, 1 programmer and they have no intention of ever changing or adding anything.

Legends is the second most. Small /v/ playerbase (only know kawaiikilla, but he/she just got a job so noplayanymore). It has more content than Royals, better coded, feels more like 2007GMS and is overall better in every way. Problem is, like Royals, has no plans on evolving, and still has HP washing.

Ellinia recently died and rebooted as Khaini. Play that if you want an up to date server.

Everything else is a fucking joke. It looks like pure vanilla is gaining interest with Project Beta recently releasing and MapleGlobal coming out in August, but Project Beta is a graveyard and as of right now, MapleGlobal is making pets donor only, which is pay2win.

I picked warrior because I was using melee as the starter class anyway and I kept regretting it because melee was shit.

I remember dying and getting stuck in the middle of the world map (it was a dark green town which was rather tall) and since the mobs around that place was so high level I kept dying to them.
Since I couldn't get far enough, I'd always respawn at the place I tried to escape from.

It doesn't. Cheating is basically non-existing in South Korea because as you said, your account is attached to your personal details in Korea. It doesn't work on a global scale due to very varying laws regarding privacy and rules regarding personal details.
