It's got to be Niko surely, he's a lot darker in tone than Trevor anyway, Trevor's just meant to be insane but Niko did all the worst things in his life willingly. Sure he regretted it but at the end of the day, all he can do is atone for what it is he did.

Trevor is mostly a horrible written Character who get hyped because his cutscene behavior is the same as how the average player plays GTA, but he is still very very bad written.
For example the whole FIB arch makes no sense. Trevor get introduced as a "I don't give a fuck, fuck the government" guy and then he takes orders from government assholes he hates without any resistance. It would make more sense that Trevor simply says "No, fuck you" and then he plays no part in this arch while you can play other missions where you can build up your drug empire.

The best protagonist in V is Michael, he's always in character.

Niko, Tommy, Michael, Victor, CJ, Toni, Luis, Johnny and Huang Lee are all better protagonists. Trevor and Franklin are the worst GTA protagonists. Claude is just a self-insert, as are the fuckton of protagonists from the 2D games.
