the problem is, the grid is the most efficient, though it is real boring and not cool looking
You could have the center of the city, the high rising apartments in a grid, but the downtown could be composed of snaky, widing roads with thees inbetween and such. It does look better, though you won't have as many buildings/not as big ones there
