144Hz with OC to 165Hz. Less than 1% of the world population can see over 165Hz realistically. And when doing a comparison between 165Hz and 144Hz, you'd have to really play them both one after the other, for a decent amount of time, to notice the difference.

240Hz is the absolute smoothest you can get from a gameplay perspective, but its only noticeable if you slow it down by 1000% to see how the frame pacing is wrt latency of the player's actions. But the probability of you being some kind of a super human god that can process and react to 240Hz is nigh impossible.

All that said, 1440p is the MINIMUM resolution baseline you should be aiming for now. 1080p is garbage. 4K is still a meme. It will be another 3-4 years before GPUs can hit 4K144 to 4K165. Once they do, upgrade your GPU and monitor to that. For now, your goal should be 1440p IPS 1-4ms GTG @ 144Hz (OC to 165Hz).

Lastly, Gsync or Freesync, get a proper adaptive sync panel and a strong enough GPU to drive it. In doing so, and tying the two together, you'll readily increase the life of your GPU by anywhere from 4-6 months.

I had a 780 and I bought a Gsync panel, it easily extended the life of my GPU by about 4 months till I got my 1080Ti. Which I will now use with a 144Hz (OC to 165Hz currently), to carry me till 2021, where I'll upgrade to a new GPU then.
