I don't think brood war needed a 'remaster'.
There's nothing in particular that I'm expecting this thing to improve and I'm concerned that the minor changes will make the game slightly different (perhaps worse). But brood war is still brood war so I can't really complain.

They've said multiple times the free version is designed to play with the Remastered version.
The whole point of making it free is to give Remastered buyers fodder to play against. Wouldn't work if it was isolated.

Ladder is not included in free version though. You can play custom games for free, but for lader access you need to buy SC:R.

It's my 1st game I preordered. I don't plan to play lader, just campaign for nostalgia hits.

The features list on starcraft.com says matchmaking and leaderboards are only in Remastered
