I think the Sonic 06 parallel was mostly a joke when it was made as a Mario game this good couldn't possibly be shite, but then people started taking the parallel seriously and started seeing the realistic people as a negative and a sign of "it's going to be terrible like 06" than as a "silly ridiculous stylistic decision"
