I'm not huge into platformers but I love shit like Castlevania, Metroid, Megaman. Maybe the hype killed Shovel Knight for me but I still think it's the bland art style. I have nothing against pixel art, but when a lot of the backgrounds in Shovel Knight are just black, it's pretty boring

I asked /v/ for an oldscool western rpg after I finished System shock. They recommended me deus ex. It felt incredibly shitty in comparison.
The same thing happened when I asked for a metroidvania game before the term metroidvania became popular. I had already played most of the castlevania games, cave story and such then /v/ recommended Metroid. Fuck it felt boring in comparison at the point that I believe the lamest metroidvania games are from the metroid saga.

I was emulating a lot of PS2 games at the time and I asked for some of the "essentials", and this got listed a couple times. The whole game seemed really story-driven which isn't really my thing to begin with, but the gameplay never clicked with me either. Just a lot of inventory management between fights and dull combat in general made me drop it around the point when Gwendolyn goes back to the castle after being exiled or whatever.

It's a very pretty game, but the story didn't pull me in enough for me to overlook the gameplay and make me want to finish it.

The difficulty is also pretty easy to cheese until Lost Kin, but I doubt you made it that far and just got mad about the system of needing to reclaim your corpse.
