I would not put up a kickstarter until a substantial amount of the game is done, have a decent sized demo to show off what has been done, have stuff planned out (Including how to downsize the game if goals are not met without damaging it too much), and go into detail about budget/development/etc. I also would not go hog wild on the stretch goals and would treat the extras more as icing on the cake then "These need to be met or the game will be a hollowed mess". I also think promising console ports so early would be a mess and cause a MN9 situation where the game suffers because of it.

I'd also be weary of too many physical items (especially after all the horror stories), and have stipulations about any user-made stuff being completely up to the team if we are to include it or not and allow us to deny stuff (To avoid a butter dragon/duncan situation)
