Then there's the multiple Bazaar-only weapons that require a ludicrous amount of grinding to get the materials for.

Other than the 3 most OP weapons in the game and the cerobi steppe chests there aren't many chests that actually have bad loot chances. At worst they have a 70% chance of spawning and 50% chance of getting the good item. Any of the 1 time only chests have a 100% chance of spawning and getting the item you want.
And honestly bazaar loot isn't that hard to farm either unless it's the elemental halcyons dropped from entites.

There's a 25% change chest in the great crystal with the yagyu and the zodiac spear is a trophy game reward. The system is kinda bullshit yeah but the game gives you more than enough stuff to complete everything, the rest if for whomever wants to spend the time hunting it or simply gets lucky. The baazar stuff is pretty overblown, does't take long to get the materials for whatever you want especially when you can speed the game up 4 times. Maybe the Mithuna since you need to kill the Archeovis or whatever they are called in the zertinan caves for loot and they are really hard to kill. Also the dev weapons but you're not supposed to get those.

One I was testing was a chest with an Ice Shield in king raithwalls tomb. After 3 hours of running back and forth all I got was gil and the "uncommon" item, an aquara mote. The chests have shit rates, dude. You just got lucky.

You look it up online. The game doesn't tell you rates. First you manipulate to get the chest to appear (if it's worth doing so), this is the most complicated part since if there is more than one chest they pull from the values one at a time and you need to see the order they pull; if there are 3 chests in a room for example and your chest is the second to pull, you set your value not to the one above the one you need but 2 above. Then when you have the chest you just set yourself to a value above the values you need, for Ice Shield for example you would need a value of 80-99 followed by a 95-99 (first to get item instead of gil, second to get the rare item). It's been a while but I think that was the gist of it. There were plenty of guides online and they should still apply for the remaster, plus apparently there's a new little program where you just input your shit and it looks up the values for you instead of having to use the fucking spreadsheets.

The way it works is, in this game the "randomness" is just pulling values from a bigass list. Each action that utilizes this list moves it down a set amount and uses the value there to decide the outcome (for example using cure moves it down exactly one, attacking 10). So if you find out where you stand on the list, from there you can manipulate where you want to be. Say you want an item from a chest that has 80% change of containing gil and then 5% chance of containing the item you want:

You find where you are on the list.

You find the next values that have a 80 to 99 (so the chest contains an item instead of gil) and a 95 to 99 (so the item is the rare item, which has a 5% chance of being so) in a row.

Through the use of Cure (moves you one value down) and hitting yourself unarmored(moves you 10 values down) put yourself one value above those two values you searched for beforehand. The reason you do this is because when you open the chest, it will move one value down the list and use the value there. It will check to see if it has an item and then it will move down one more and check to see if it's the rare item or not.

I know I'm not explaining very well but I'm not very good at explaining things. There should be detailed guides online man.

I'd swap Machinist and Shikari around, as you'd end up with a crazy strong beatstick with Foe/Shikari, a WHM that can use guns (which don't base their damage off of any stat, so they are great for a WHM) and will get a good deal of extra HP and some bonus high end time magic.
