reaching the 3rd arc requires a bit of time and a little thinking (maybe some luck). An event needs to trigger but not sure if its random or not. I would say u have quite a decent amount of game left but a lot of people consider the point after 2nd arc to have a lot of filler time.

RF1 is very simplistic as a Harvest Moon and an RPG with many things not well designed (magic, dungeons you can miss for months, how to carry shit etc) and not much dialogue/events.

RF2 put a bit more focus on character interactions and ploy and some quality of life improvements, but also some weird ass decisions. Two steps forward, one step back, 3 steps sideways.

RF Frontier improves yet again on many systems, but has the FUCKING RUNEYS. Look that up, get a patch etc.

RF3 improves on almost everything from 1 and 2 and has quite likely the best cast/character development overall, improving also farming, combat, town events etc.

RF4 puts even more emphasis on plot and how townspeople interact with each other, but has a little less emphasis per character if you do not romance them. You can date multiple characters till you marry though.

Oceans is very different(different dungeons, farming, monster taming mechanics) and inferior to 3/4, but still.

Either play them chronologically or start from 3/Frontier (it's hard to go back then)

There are a bunch. Some of them you can only propose to at certain times, some of them you need an item (which can be story-related or as simple as a Large Milk). Having lots of monsters is a req for one of them, one you need to catch a rare fish and (annoyingly) trade it back and forth with a friend to level it up.

All the girls also had interesting options when it came to raising affections - some were more important to talk to, others would only really respond to presents.

It's more about how the game went out of its way to make the whole romance process individual for each girl that impressed me. With RF4, for instance, the process is basically the same for each girl - give gifts, go on dates, see all their random events. Sure, there's a lot of content there, but it's all visual-novel style text. RF1 really made you feel like marriage was a gameplay victory.

I never quite liked RF4 as much as I liked RF3 or any other RF. I'm pretty sure it's technically the best in the series, and I really want to love this game, but I can't for some godforsaken reason. I wonder why. It's kinda frustrating really.

Sweet fucking relief; they weren't kidding when they said that area was a massive difficulty spike. The boss monster holding the orb at the end was a total fucking pushover though which was odd.

I dont know how I still put like 60 hours into that game. Nothing about it felt good.
The characters, the plot, the graphics, dungeons, etc. Everything felt so inferior to previous games.
Gameplay was more of the same, at least they let you take monsters and NPCs with you on adventures, which should have been a part of all the games.
At first I thought I was just getting tired of the formula, but then I started replaying Frontier and Oceans again and I still have fun with them.
And lets not even talk about the waifus who are probably the most boring in the whole series.
Liked butterfly girl(cant even remember her name) and the sleepy maid, and while I went into "dates" with butterfly girl I couldnt be bothered to get to the marriage part.
Truly a shame.

I was running into like fire ghosts, pumpkinhead mages, scorpions, hordes of sword-throwing assholes, etc and almost none of them were interruptable/stunned by anything short of a launching attack and the R dodge/dash only seems to work about 50% of the time. For the record my R button works just fine, I think they just programmed too short of a "tapped to dash" versus "held to walk" window into the game.

That was exactly what I did, but it was only because literally none of the other romance options interested me in the slightest. NotSaber was like a 3/10 in my books, too. I really disliked RF4's characters, which is probably why I dropped it. They failed to even be attractive and interesting on a superficial level like most girls from every other entry in the series (although I haven't played RF1).

ToD screwed up big time by locking the female character behind such a large wall (getting most of the way through the game and getting every marriable character up to 6 hearts). That and the fact that watering plants every day was tedious and took too long since you had to hop to multiple islands.
It's a shame because the characters and town were all top-quality. And I don't know what it was, but the gameplay just held my interest longer than any of the other titles.
