For my past 20 hours of game time I have played with everything on Ultra and several mods with no issues. I have a GTX 1070, i7, and 16GB RAM. I have a 144hz monitor.
Last night I was playing, zero issues.
Today I logged on Steam to play and I cannot get over 40fps.
I tried going to an area that is undemanding in terms of FPS, updating my video drivers, disabling all mods, and lowering the video settings to medium with mods off. I still cannot get above 40fps.
I never changed any settings or installed any mods between last night when I was experiencing 60fps with no dips and today when I was experiencing 40fps with dips.
Can anyone please point me in the right direction on what might have changed?

You should change it to 60Hz for Skyrim, as it uses your refresh rate as a framerate target, and anything over 60 fucks shit up.

Start a new character to make sure it's not just save file bloat. If it runs smooth on a new character and badly on an old character, clean your save files. There are two programs you need for this, both on the Nexus.

Also how are other games running? Can you narrow it down to JUST Skyrim or is your whole system running slower?

I will try this but I'm confused why it would be fine for 20 hours and then suddenly become an issue?

I just tried to test another game and it took a shit. I think it might be the GPU.
