if the enemies are withing range, choose a body part to attack
later on you can chain techniques by assinging them to different buttons. if you're good you can theoretically do it forever

oh boy. damage is complicated in this game.
basically the more you use a weapon against a certain type of enemy, the more effective it becomes. certain weapons are naturally better against certain types too.
there's also training dummies of several types scattered about where you can grind your weapons until they're perfect against a specific enemy type. i recommend checking out guides if you want more in-depth explanations about this but yeah, keep "training" your weapons against certain enemies and it'll become more effective against that enemy

Tried this a couple months ago, the intro alone had better directing than most jrpgs of the last 10 years.

Did put it aside at some point because of reasons but it was a nice game. A bit clunky to play and very unusual battle system but the plot and characters looked very promising.

the combat was kind of frustrating too. I remember some fight against a dragon where its weak point was the tail, but it would keep instantly turning to face you so it was almost impossible to actually hit it.

I played this game a few years back for the story but everything else was very PlayStation One.

It still impresses me that Vagrant Story's NG+ easily adds like 25% more to the size of game, and even adds to the lore when it could have just been more challenging bosses or something.

That and the rudimentary achievement system makes game seem really ahead of its time. It might have taken a while but it was damn satisfying to finally pull a 30-hit chain and get that "knight of brilliance" title in your status screen

this is the only jrpg i could ever really get into, the combat system is actually well designed and challenging instead of just spamming the same commands over and over, and you never have to grind to advance in the game, in fact you cant really even grind for levels in it. also great music and atmosphere, and i think the graphics still look good.

The truth is that the game was never graphically impressive, people were already hyping the PS2 and the dawn of next gen. It came way too late for people to be impressed about pixelated mannequins with wobbling polygons.

After not touching it for almost twelve years I decided to emulate it on my tablet. Emulation was almost perfect and best of all I had no trouble making chains on a touchscreen so I managed to finish it twice. It's as good as I remembered it, and I had an easier time given how I'm already familiarized with the combat system.

Guildestern is one of the few times in a videogame where the final boss is the hardest boss in the game; not even Asura is such a pain in the ass.
