You collect stuff, use them to craft something and make a profit, use said profit to buy stuff for you or your farm, or you can just buy a lot of a particular item and sell it in another city where is more needed
For example there's a city where all the carpenters live, so selling wood there won't get you much money, but they may need food, so you get the point.
