>>
Yes
They also still trigger childhood rage
>>
Castlevania 1, 3, and Rondo? Absolutely. 4 isn't that bad either. The future of the series after Rondo is pretty sad though. They completely missed the point of Super Metroid and seriously dumbed down the series as a result.
>>
CV3 is one of the best in the series

Pretty recently got into them.

They definitely hold up in the art and music department. It takes a lot of getting used to difficulty wise, that's for sure. I like the design of having to be deliberate about how you place yourself, but it feels like there's a lot of unnecessary difficulty that could be resolved with slightly faster walking speed. I've really liked everything in 1 and 3 besides that.
>>
>>384597317
With the translation hack of course.

The Japanese Famicom cartridge of Akumajō Densetsu (Legend of the Demon Castle) was installed with the VRC6 coprocessor, the western equivalent, the NES wasn't compatible with the VRC6 coprocessor so Castlevania 3 had to downgrade all the music to work with the MMC5. Luckily there are translated rom hacks of Akumajo Densetsu so you can play it in English.

Well, of course you'd rage if you used the wrong weapon.

The original has some of the best level design and enemy placement ever. Literally the entire game is designed against someone being able to just steamroll a level blindly.

Rondo - It's like 3 again but even better 10/10

>>
>>384596547
If you're playing Castlevania 1 for the first time you'll probably be getting pretty frustrated for awhile. Once you're good at the game it is pretty fun, but it is really short and inconsistent.

Castlevania 3 is still really punishing for a newcomer, but is a lot meatier and more well-designed. I fucking love this game.

Save yourself a lot of trouble and look up exactly how subweapons work. Triple shot holy water is your best friend in both of these games.
>>
>>384596940
Played castlevania as a kid (1 and Simon's quest)
Recently picked up SotN. Metroid did the genre so much better, alucard feels slow as fuck and I rather have effective upgrades that double as helpful in combat and exploration as opposed to stats. Do other games follow this style? Or did it get improved upon?
>>
>>384604384
I don't feel that it improved much until OoE, and that's mostly because it feels like they went "fuck it" with the exploration and made it almost entirely about combat and made leveling up so meaningless that Hard Mode lvl 1 is an actual mode in the game and not a self-imposed challenge. Classicvania is still the best, though.

>>
>>384606092
You have the actual originals to experience, so why the fuck would you play awkward approximations? CV Rebirth to CV1 and 3 is what Sonic 4 is to Sonic 1-3.
>>
>>384596547
No. Pretty much all NES games have aged like milk. The controls are clunky, the games are short and lacking of content and the shortness is compensated with difficulty which is often caused by things like "one hit kills everywhere, no continues" or just being overly cryptic. SNES is where it's at as those games have often aged very well and can still be enjoyed by new players even without nostalgia. See for example Super Castlevania IV, A Link to the Past and Super Mario World and compare those to the first games of their series. The difference is night and day.
>>
>>384606463
>difference is night and day

agreed, CV1 shits all over CV4
>>
>>384596547
Yep, 1 & 3 are probably the best "hard NES platformers". The 16bit games are pure ludo, even Dracula X is pretty good.
>>
>>384606373
my bad I should have explained that first
I'm holding off on the S/NES Castlevanias because all I currently have is a Wii and I don't want to buy VC shit when the shop could be pulled soon, so I'll get them on the 3DS instead
>>
>>384606463
>difficulty which is often caused by things like "one hit kills everywhere, no continues" or just being overly cryptic
What the fuck are you even talking about? The games have a health system, infinite continues, and are strict action/ platformers. You're fucking stupid. Jesus fucking christ.
>>
>>384605334
>not emulating the japanese version
enjoy your shit music my man
>>
>>384605971
I have no idea how someone could claim that the original CV is so much better than the others unless they are really bad at the other games.

Castlevania 1 to Castlevania 3 is like going from Sonic 1 to Sonic 3 and Knuckles.
>>
>>384606373
You are a fucking idiot.
>>
>>384606798
I was talking about NES games in general but I guess that was too hard for you to understand so you had to go into a tantrum. In Castlevania's case tho the difficulty comes mostly from the lack of save feature since you either beat the entire game in one sitting or you don't beat it at all.
>>
>>384605334
did you take Alucard route to Sunken City? The boss their is fucking bullshit in the American version where you can only hit it's head to damage it unlike Japanese where hitting it anywhere counts.

>>384606842
>implying I didnt
Anon, Castlevania 3 isn't on the NES mini unless you hack it.
>>
>>384607308
>unless they are really bad at the other games.

called it. and nice job completely failing to grasp that analogy.

As someone who is actually good at CV3, the only truly cheap part of the game is the rising water segment in hard mode specifically. You basically need Alucard and you need to get lucky (ridiculous bat spawns on both sides). The changes to the bone tower enemies in hard mode also make a couple of stairs-focused segments sort of inconsistent to get out of unscathed. The regular game though is utterly fair.

Also you must be really forgetting how the death and frankenstein battles are. They are heavily, heavily luck-based unless you've had the prior knowledge necessary to freeze them with powered-up holy water as soon as you reach them. Those fights a certified bullshit without taking that very specific approach.

Its very good. You can even use the wiimote as a whip too.
>>
>>384608536
why's that?
>>
>>384608259
no it isn't, the whole game is an endurance round which doesn't work well with how little life you have, and that's beyond all the death pits and stairs. the ninja gaiden type bosses and difficulty doesn't mesh with the movement mechanics either, it's the most memorization heavy castlevania. a it's not tuned at all and being more difficult doesn't mean it's better, see double dragon 3

>>
>just got my Sharp X68000 emulator up and running on RetroArch and will be playing some Castlevania later

>>384608259
Are you talking about CV1 Death? That's not bullshit. Even you can't get to him with holy water to cheese him, you can get the cross along the way from the checkpoint and the little sickles sometimes drop the II and III items when you destroy them. It's the kind of fight that gets easier the longer it goes on, since pretty soon you'll have triple crosses and will be dealing a ton of damage. It's the hardest boss in the game for sure, but there's no bullshit there.

Of course I'm talking about thr CV1 bosses there. And no, the fight is still bullshit. You may not be completely helpless with the cross but you still have to get pretty lucky. CV1 Death and Frankenstein are so well beyond anything else in what you're expected to deal it that it becomes a glaring balance issue.

If you couldn't trivialize them with holy water they would sort of break the game themselves.

>>384609938
I think I've only made it to Death with the holy water once and I never felt that the game was broken. The cross is really all you need. As long as you focus on breaking the sickles and you don't catch your own cross and let it fly, Death just takes damage from your cross flying through the room while you're focused on the sickles. And it really is just a matter of time before the double and triple items start dropping, at which point you pretty much already won.
>>

Great, now you're manually reminding me that we have never hacked SotN at all, and created remixed levels/stages, including adding in enemies from the handheld games.

1 is solid. It's a game worth completing and getting good at. I still run through it every now and then.

Everyone says 3 is so good, but I wonder how many people actually bothered to complete the game. There is a lot of bullshit in the later stages. The first 4 stages of the game is baby mode, but from stage 5 and onward it's just artificial difficulty.

I also wonder how many people actually tried 2, or if they just get their opinions from the AVGN.

Why is it that Sony hasn't ported all the old Castlevania Games on to the PS4? Why is it that Nintendo hasn't ported the rest of the Castlvania games on the Switch or Wii U?

Why do you still have to buy the old fucking consoles just to play these games? i had to by a PS2 just to play SOTN and Lament of Darkness. its crap. I wish they would make something that didn't require me to drop 500$ so much.

My computer is from like 2010 (not even a gaming rig) and I still emulated both PS2 castlevanias without any issues. I just had to get rid of the shadows in Lament of Innoncence because they only showed up on a specific setting that was a bit too much to handle for my CPU.
Even if your computer is from the stone age the only games you can't play are the PS2 ones and it's not a big deal because while they're OK games, they're nothing to write home about.

I love the art design of DCX. Which is why I hate that it's a remake. I love the deisgns, but they're just not Ritchter and Maria. They look different.

Iga fell for the Remake meme. He should have made a game for the PSP that's a SEQUEL to Symphony. These characters could be the children of Richter.

Reading between the lines, you can tell that development is really troubled.

>Pick Unreal Engine touting it's quick development and tournaround time
>Iga announces a massive delay
>Two entirely new companies part way through production
>cited the need for experience with Unreal engine, programming, and wanting to make the game look like a modern console game
>Inti's logos vanish from all preview material, including trailers
>look around the office video showed Dico employees, and no Inti staff
>Wikipedia user claims to be an employee for the publisher and posts: "Inti Creates is no longer involved with the project. They are developing the prequel minigames. Lastly, DICO is programming the game, but design and direction is all coming from Artplay)

The last part really clarifies everything. The new teams weren't there to assist Inti-Creates, but to completely replace them. They've been kicked off the project since Nov 2016.

I'm actually making a game HEAVILY inspired by the old Castlevanias at the moment, and I might need some input from you fellas. I'm having trouble coming up with a save system.

What I was thinking was having a password given to you at the start of each level (there's probably gonna be 6-10 levels). You can begin the game from the start with 3 lives, OR enter the password to immediately jump to that level with only 1 life. The problem with this, I've realised, is that losing all lives would simply restart the level with 3 lives, so the best thing to do after entering a password would be to immediately kill yourself to get 3 lives back, making the 3 lives starting game advantage null.

Can anyone else think of a better solution? Try to think of how you'd implement a save system in Castlevania 1.
>>
>>384621640
Rondo did it the best. Just let the player select the level from the start screen, level passwords are an outdated concept of the past and there is literally no reason to force someone to remember them.
>>
>>384621640
Have a selectable "Arcade Mode" for folks that want the challenge. Normal save system otherwise. Passwords seem cool for nostalgia's sake, but are awful relics that should stay back in that era.

What's the point? Just balance it around a 1cc. People who want difficulty will go for that or a no death run. Let the others use their 3 lives. I guess you could also let them keep their subweapon and upgrades if they continue with 1 life, so there will be a good reason to not kill themselves if they have a fully powered up holy water or cross or something. Passwords are shit though, don't use them.

i like how this made people so mad over something so dumb

the bishop is clearly evil, but they make that very apparent. religion by nature is not evil in the world, but the bishop himself is corrupt and is taking everything in the wrong direction. not once does it say the people are evil for their worship, or that the people as a whole are responsible for everything bad. the only person who says that is Dracula, who is resorting to extreme conclusions and not thinking from the perspective of an individual - the pressure of the church and the bishop's power wouldn't allow the ordinary citizen to speak up against this wrong practice

the belmonts literally have christ on their side, and a priest even makes holy water

god is cool, but he's genuinely disgusted with the evil dude and how he's been misleading the good people and twisting their religion, who by the way totally isn't Shaft from SOTN

I'd say 1 and 3 still hold up extremely well. It strikes a solid balance between challenging and fun. They're tough, but not too frustrating. Ninja Gaiden is much more difficult, for example. I can't recommend Castlevania 2 at all, but it did try some interesting and noteworthy things.

The only thing baby mode here is you, anon. The American release is more punishing because of the way the game handles damage, but it's still pretty fair.

It's not "bugged", it's just more difficult thanks to the enemy damage scaling. It's still a very doable and fair game for the most part, if you can beat the jp version then you can beat the US one too. The only bullshit thing is them removing the checkpoint

It's neither a classic nor a metroidvania style game so I can see why neither camp would be too big on it. It's also a pretty short and small game.

I did still have a good time with it and occassionally will start a file and blitz through it in a couple hours. The combat can be fun and the bosses are cool. My biggest gripes are that you can't restart individual chapters (the Trevor one is by far my favorite but it's at the end) and that the performance isn't great on 3DS.

Decide I will beat Castlevania in front of the class without dying. I get permission slip to bring in NES, get TV from AV room. Wheel it in and make brief presentation - ask teacher to turn off the lights. 5 Mins in there are gasps as I expertly dodge Medusa heads, even let one hit me because I know it will knock me back onto the platform beneath. Simons Quest is garbage. Terrible level design and haphazard enemy placement. It's the exact opposite of 1 and 3 where every gap, item, and enemy were placed precisely to compliment the controls and physics.

2 does none of that, everything is just placed everywhere and it does not translate to good gameplay. That's what ultimately makes it shit, not necessarily the cryptic clues or anything like that, just the level design being complete and utter toss.

You'd have to be a contrarian hipster, or someone who literally grew up with Simons Quest and no other game in your library to disagree

Not so sound stupid, but would you say Castlevania Dracula X-Chronicles is worth it? I've only briefly played the first game years ago and beat the DS metroidvanias but I'm more than aware its a different beast entirerly. I love the gameplay of the NES classics (even if I've never beaten one) and hope that Dracula X is a love letter to the series rather than a blatant cashgrab. Also I've never played SOTN for longer than an hour because a friend owned it rather than it being my copy.

Sorry for the block of text, I always love hearing /v/'s thoughts on games because it genuinely brings things to the table I miss on my own as well as making arguments for games that I should go back and replay with an open mind.

If I wanted to fully understand all of the references that the show makes to the games, which games would I play? I've only played SoTN.
>>
So I went back and played SotN again after 20 fucking years.

And its way easier than I remember. I mean fuck. The only things that can possibly fuck you up pre-Inverted Castle are Richter if you don't get the holy armor and Doppleganger if you can't get down the right approach. Death is a complete fucking joke in SotN even without shit like Crissaegrim or Yasutsuna.

Galamoth is a tough fight if you don't cheese it with the lightning heal item or the Alucard Shield combo but nothing else really stands out for me.

Wasn't there some romhack out there that revamps SotN and makes it much harder?

>>384649673
>>384649982
I beat it in one sitting today. I only died two or three times and didn't die for hours into the game. Sloga and Gaimon got raped from punishing their initial phase where they're in the air with well spaced aerials and axes. I also found taking center stage to be good vs. being cornered by both of them.

Ricther and Doppleganger are even easier compared to these guys, I think.

Now let's post music, I'll start:

>>
No, all NES cartridge rips are fucked due to entropy scrambling the bits and making games much harder than they were at the time. On top of that the controls are finnicky since the response to your input at any given time could be lost due to bit rot. Only play games made after ~2000, that's when digital storage became popular and even analog games from that time were preserved in better conditions so they hold up better today.

Aria of Sorrow was an attempt to normalize the franchise worldwide by changing the name of the series in Japan from Akumajou Dracula to Castlevania.
There was a huge backlash. The low sales are probably a reflection of that.
>>
>>384652694
The next game (and all games after) went back to using Akumajou Dracula for it's title.
Ironically, Aria of Sorrow featured Dracula's Castle and dropped the Akumajou Dracula title, while Dawn of Sorrow didn't feature Dracula's Castle at all but returned to the Akumajou Dracula title.

Yes. 1 and 3 are still amazing games that both blow out the entire catalog of metroidvanias.
>>
>>384604384
The other Metroidvania games in the series got better, for example as far as power goes Circle of the Moon has some mad fun powers and a great progression, like first you get some running boots, then double jump, some tackling move that doubles as a panic dodge, and other great mobility options. I agree with you that most of the abilities in SOTN felt very redundant (like nigga there's the cube of zoe which simply causes subweapons to appear like nigga wtf who thought that was relevant?)

Check out portrait of ruin, it's imho the best metroidvania and my favorite castlevania in fact

>>384610080
I dropped CoD because the running animation was incredibly fucking ugly and slow. The guy would lift his knees almost to his chest, like when the gym teacher in P.E would make you run like that to stretch before a softball game.

And I disliked LoI because it's really poorly designed. Like there's no leveling so there's really no point in fighting any enemy and the game felt short and the castle was uninteresting. The skills were also bad
>>
>>384653442
Juste in HoD animates like crap though

Not him but chapter 10 was fun because said Somashitters usually got their asses handed to them when their precious valmanway was useless to the Count. They'd die and sometimes cost you the game but would still insist on using that weapon anyway. Some people also liked to bring friends into the Count's room too and force everyone to fight vampire bats and sometimes even Death if they were good glitching through walls.
