Arena shooters don't exist anymore, not like they once were

There is no market for actual competitive games beyond fighting games anymore. No one wants to admit they're shit so many games now have outs like teams or balance or rng etc.
Getting your shit artificially pushed in by Quake daddies is not fun, and no one in this day in age has the attention span or attitude to actually practice enough to make a difference.

I have all my hopes on Quake Champions pretty much.

Without it will be pretty much dead.

Also, anyone who think everyone good at Quake is old is wrong. Its probably not like that at all.

You can still play and become good if you work at it. About a month will let you rip a newbie a new one 100% of the time
