My guess is is that Nintendo implemented this because they either want to protect kids from voice chat in their system OR they forgot to add it to their system in the first place. Or they could just be plain stupid and thought it was a good idea to do this via phones.

Either way Nintendo needs to get with the times and add voice chat to their base system. Otherwise, the Switch will not be taken very seriously as the PS4/PC/X1 platforms are for shooter games. Its no wonder COD is gonna miss this platform, because of that, and its technical limitations.

There are two possible scenarios here:

A.)Use the software, then oblivious Nintendo assumes it's fine and then never bothers to change/update it.

B.)No one uses the software until Nintendo promises to fix it, and oblivious Nintendo assumes that people don't want online voice chat, retires it, and then goes on to not include voice chat at all in upcoming titles.

The Switch SHOULD have voice chat functionality. That's the issue, and one that I don't even think was a design oversight as much as it was Nintendo cheaping out on essential features in favor of cramming in useless stuff like the IR sensor or HD rumble. (The latter is nice, but still.)

And if they WERE going to release it half baked, they could have at least made the app convenient instead of making it super obtuse in the classic Nintendo fashion. Instead, it's a battery draining mess that lacks basic features found in things like Skype. There's literally no reason to use it over any other voip program, which require about the same amount of effort and offer a far better experience.

Wii U gamepad had a mic built in, and allowed for seemless voice chat in games like Monster Hunter. Plug in headset and your good to go. Obviously that wouldn't work when docked, but the Wii U gamepad's headphone jack also supported headsets so I see no reason why the Switch couldn't. Hell, they could have even made it compatible with bluetooth headsets.

No fucking excuse that there wasn't a hardware solution to voice chat other then them cheaping out on parts.
