If I'm roleplaying, I'll just try and match the theme of the world for the character I'm playing.

If it's a generic account/username, I'll just use my regular internet handle.

If it's some dumb, I'm screwing around, I'll just make something up dumb on the spot.

Or if it's an alternate/smurf account, I'll do some cheeky name that fits the game, that clearly a regular level 1 wouldn't have if they didn't have prior experience to the game.

If it's a game like Disgaea where you create generic units I name them after fruits.
Not fruit based puns, just fruits. Sometimes vegetables.
If it's a game like where you name unique characters I name them after books.
I mean actual types of books, like atlas, tome, dictionary, diary, etc.

I use my last name, it fits pretty well in any settings.
Otherwise I got backup names depending on whether or not I need to name multiple characters, female characters, etc.

I try to fit the setting a bit, although I look at those settings through a real-world lens so it probably fails sometimes.

For example, if I were to rename Ramza (Which I never do) I would probably give him an anglican/germanic old family name.

Characters I either use one of a few male/female names I just happen to really like, go to one of those baby naming sites for certain languages, or find an lore-compliant name generator and swap out some letters

The first username I ever used was "anikan1123" on club penguin. I used that for a few years, but eventually that was taken, so I switched to "mercer1123", which I still use. More recently though, for multiplayer games, I pick the stupidest name possible, so when I beat someone they feel worse. Some names I'm using now include "Bumbumtumtum" and "flumpyrumpy".

Use default name whenever possible.
Otherwise I have specific First name / Last name combinations for both male and female characters. I always go for those.
If there is canon name found outside of the game, I use that for the second playtrough.

Well well well, I'm glad you asked. I am willing to give you a quick rundown of professional name creation just for you.
First thing first you'll need the following items:

1) five red candles
2) A mirror
3) A dead rat
4) Salt
5) Something of value
6) A book about necromancy

Now that you've got the items you need, go into a room without windows or block them till there is no light. At this point, light the candles and arrange them into a semicircle. For character names, I have a short list of names I default to. Sometimes I spin a name generator. Sometimes I use my own.

I have like 3 usernames I use, 2 are near identical and are just based off the classic 'part of first and last names + number'. My username features a number but the number makes sense within the context of the username so i can just change the number if i like.
For singleplayer games i just trey to pick a name that feels appropriate.

My username is pretty original. I've never found it taken on any website. For character names, I have a few that I like. I'll use one of those if it's not already taken and is suitable for the character. Otherwise, I'll just look through a name generator until something stands out.
