That really only happened from 2 to 3 though, and that was because of the transition to 3D. The series has always reused assets from game to game to make bigger and bigger rosters but for this they cut out a ton of shit despite still doing asset reuse either because of Marvel's X-Men/F4 embargo or so they can resell them as future DLC. Honestly I wouldn't of minded the Capcom side all that much if they just brought basically everyone back from UMVC3.

The Capcom cast in that game pretty much WAS perfect. Basically every noteworthy Capcom franchise besides Monster Hunter (Street Fighter, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Bionic Commando, Okami, Viewtiful Joe, Ace Attorney, Ghost N' Goblins, Final Fight, Strider, Mega Man, Darkstalkers, and Dead Rising) got their due. I agree that Venom gets a lot of representation outside of the comic space, but that's mostly because he is a straightforward villain that is easy to squeeze into most narratives without having to change much.

Perhaps most interestingly, Venom works best as a side-villain. A nemesis that appears at the worst possible moment during an otherwise unrelated event.

There are two major problems with this roster, with the second one stemming partially from the first.

A.)Too many of the characters are ported over mostly unchanged from UMvC3. Seriously, out of the 32 non-DLC characters only 6 are newcomers. Seven if you count Thanos with his redone moveset. That's fucking disgusting, and screams laziness on Capcom's part.

B.) It's too safe. Nothing on this roster is even remotely exciting. Jedah is literally the only surprising addition on this roster, maybe Monster Hunter if it wasn't something that was a long time coming. This makes it come across as bland, as part of the appeal of these games was seeing crazy matchups of weird characters that you would never expect to see in a fighting game facing off with eachother. Instead of HYPE, all I feel is meh.

Instead of getting excited by new characters, it feels like looking at a boring checklist every time they reveal something new. On the Marvel side it's understandable, but there's no reason for the Capcom roster to be as bland as it is. If anything, it should have even wackier to compensate for how grounded the Marvel side is.

Instead, they just ported over a bunch of MvC3 guys and called it a day.

I wouldn't have a problem with the amount of recycled content if it meant we had a giant roster with a bunch of newcomers added because of all the money saved by filling out a good chunk of the lists with cheap characters who's assets were lifted from MvC3. Cut costs to make the game as big as possible, like MvC2.

That's why he Marvel games kept shuffling rosters, Darkstalkers 3 had to cut characters from Darkstalkers 2, and worst of all the "Super" version of Darkstalkers 3 had to be released as two separate games. Darkstalkers only has 18 characters in the entire franchise. They'd have to put all of them in the box for there to even be a chance people would buy it.

Venom is frustrating because he's the only non-MCU character on Marvel's side, and of all people it's the meme Spider-man villain as opposed to one of the classics or even another previously unrepresented hero like Daredevil or Moon Knight or literally anything else. If there were actual comic only characters, it would be less of an issue.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but a big problem with the Capcom side in my opinion is a lack of variety. Arthur is fine, a great addition even, but I would prefer Arthur or Firebrand + another unique fighter from another IP as opposed to both.

Marvel vs Capcom 2 made up for the amount of recycled content by having a HUGE roster that threw in everything + the kitchen sink and then some. MvC3 recycles 80% of it's content, and has a smaller roster than it's predecessor with barely anything new. If the new game had almost every character returning and gave us a giant cast comparable to MvC2 I would not be complaining.
