Negative temperature describes heat flow. -290k is room temperature.

It's described as "hotter than the hottest positive temperature" because no matter how hot a regular temperature object is, ie the sun, an ice cube with negative temperature would heat up the sun while cooling itself down.

Empty space is no kelvin. It's not 0, it's not two, it literally does not have a temperature, because it's EMPTY.
What is heat? The movement of molecules. How can a space with no molecules have a temperature? The few Kelvin you're told of refers to the specks of dust and other objects scattered around inside the vacuum, which is why you won't freeze to death if you'd float around in space. Instead, you would overheat since there is nothing to transfer the heat you generate into.

Asking about the temperature of empty space is like asking about the speed of a shadow, completely pointless because it does not possess that quantity.
