This is false.
The author said many times he used Zero Mission sprites as a reference but that's all they are, a reference. They're still custom made.

Nintendo has a strict "fuck fans" policy based on their history. They'd never partner with him.
Anyway at such low game resolution, there's only so much you can do with sprites without them looking "similar" especially when you are aiming for an authentic and faithful look.
