I think games like UC4 are perfect mixtures from both worlds. You have certain big hub worlds (like Madagascar) you can fully explore, but it's linear just with very huge linear levels without going full open world.

The larger the map. The harder to do map design, enemy encounters and actual gameplay mechanics. There are sime instances where the sacrifice is worth. Typically Rpgs. But other games don't add anything in exchange for value.
Metal gear solid was not ooen world at all. It had clearly well designed levels with according encounters puzzles anf challenges. Zelda I'll agree. Witcher 1 fucking sucked. The combat is awful and 90% of the game is slowly walking back and forth.

I was hating on the "open world meme" especially the Ubisoft games and thought that all open world games would be pretty shit from now on. The turd that was Fallout 4 confirmed this to me.

But then out of nowhere Breath of The Wild released and convinced me that the "open world" concept still has some hope it's just that it's only done by incompetent developers and they all feel like bland shit.

If games would be made as BoTW then I would actually prefer open world games over more focused experiences. But I know that almost no developer is capable of that so I will say I prefer more focused experiences just because those will have a higher chance of being enjoyable if made by shit devs.
