Snes trouble

I never had an snes as a kid, so i recently got one because everyone talks about how great it was, and it came with all the cords and such, and after buying a game for cheap (mortal kombat 3) to test if it worked, it didnt work, the light turned on to show there is power (its red though, not sure what color its supposed to be) but no matter what i do i dont get any image, just a black screen, i tried plugging the av cables into one of the ports on my switcher that i know works, got rid of the switcher snd used the main av ports on the tv and neither of those worked, the av cable is brand new just out of the package. Is it fucked or am i missing something here?
