I was invited to a village where NPCs fend off anything dangerous leaving me to build my autism fortress in peace. Still don't know what the death screen looks like.
It's kind of like rust, but with skills and everything takes a shitload of time whereas in rust you can place down walls and such instantly.

If it is pirate friendly I might be able to get some friends to play, maybe 3-5 other people. How do the groups work? Are they like clans and you all work together and don't smash eachother's shit? Not with our client at least, its geared towards our server specifically. But the game itself can be played locally.

THere's many people playing on their own in the server though, you're not forced to play with ohters and the world is big.

Theres many youtube guides and the wiki has good info if you wanna play alone. Otherwise usually most people learn in villages.
