Sonic has always been mediocre garbage and only the original trilogy and CD were mildly decent. It's embarrassing he has such an undeserved status as an icon.

There really aren't that many terrible Sonic games. If anything Sonic is just consistently mediocre. He's the Spider-Man of the videogame industry.

It's a niche as fuck, but he dominate's his own genre, the high-speed roller-coaster plat-former. Also he's got style, and the series has at least got consistently good music.

What I don't understand is why people hate Sanic, if you don't like the games, don't play em.

pretty simple -- they've sold pretty damn well, and he ran on sheer lasting brand appeal for a decade despite his glory days of competing directly with Mario being long behind him, and there have been some surprisingly decent games in the mix as well

The original games on Genesis range from decent to amazing, and all of them have excellent music and graphics.

SA1 and 2 are like 60% junk, but the other 40% is decent. Heroes kind of sucks, but it's still a fairly playable game despite some pretty fucking awful levels like Rail Canyon and the casino stages.
Advance 1 is stellar, if lacking in the music department and looks a little bland. Great stage design and handles closely to the originals. Advance 2 drastically bumps up the qualty of the graphics and music, but stage design drops off a fair bit. It's fast and fun. Advance 3 kind of sucks (handling is weird, stage design is all kinds of bullshit -- but it's also very platform oriented, no real hold right rollercoaster bits like large segments of Advance 2), but has even cooler music and graphics.
Shadow fucking sucks, but it was a spinoff.
Rush is very good, despite awful physics (that can be ignored because lol boost). Rush Adventure is a better game, but sailing fucking sucks.

I dunno how it survived Sonic 06, although that sold well enough to get a fucking Platinum Hits re-release, which is fucking absurd
Unleashed is solid despite a lot of dumb shit, Colors is good other than having some real fucking garbage filler stages (and it's the first mainline Sonic game in ages with no bullshit other characters doing other not-get-to-the-end-asap gameplay shit no one cares about).
Generations was pretty damn good, other than Classic Sonic handling like shit.
Things started looking up.

I can't judge this fairly, I hate this shit for being slower (even when speedrun) than a newbie playing Sonic 1. Some people think it's okay.

ultimately, the games haven't been absolute garbage except for 06 and Shadow, the rest have consistently had redeeming value to them
being merely kind of bad with some good shit in there isn't enough to kill a franchise, especially if it's still selling

also thats because everyone bought sonic 06. it was hyped to hell and back as the first "next gen" sonic game.

See this image? it was in every fucking videogame magazine, which was gushing over "look at how many more polygons Sonic has now!"

people were hyped for the game. And the trailers showed off the mach speed sections to show the "fast" gameplay. of course they only showed Sonic, Silver and Shadow in trailers too

and this was 2006, before youtube was really that big, at least for videogame stuff. Most people were still on Myspace.

so only after everyone had bought the game did they realize how bad it was.

the gameplay is actually just fine. the gunplay is actually not bad. homing attacks can get iffy, but when they work, they work. it's moreso shit in the sense that it's so needlessly edgy and non-sonic in tone and story

well funny you mention that, Shadow basically uses the same engine as Heroes, as well as reusing assets such as character models and even the sky in the final boss fight.

it's kind of shit. The concept was promising, the execution was garbage. the game is buggy, the level design sloppy, and in general, the story is just bland apart from porn of the green chick.

the intro stage to this is basically as good as it gets.

I just went through Shadow again (this time around on PS2 sadly since I don't have a GC or Wii right now -- but at least this port isn't as bad as Heroes on PS2, good god) because my nephew is in town, and he kind of likes that game.

And nah, the stages and missions are shit.
The controls aren't too bad, at least. Gunplay kind of sucks, but it's not unworkable, could have been better. Graphics are actually pretty nice, too. Shame about the framerate on PS2, but oh well.
Chaos Blast is super useful, Chaos Control is retarded and doesn't really help you in the hero missions -- if it was always time stop like in bosses, that might be more useful.

The gameplay is just Heroes again which was bad to begin with and the gunplay is completely terrible, along with being unfortunately necessitated by the game for some reason deciding to extrapolate on one of the key complaints with Heroes, its direct predecessor, enemies having health bars, which are glacially diminished by non-firearm attacks.

Sonic games are fun, thats just about it. The nu sonic games from this generation aren't that fun. Mania will probably be the only good sonic game for the current set of consoles (xb1, ps4, switch). But I'll still always have sonic 3, sonic cd, sonic adventure, sonic heroes, sonic unleashed etc to play. I actually just bought another copy of 06 because my first gen 360 destroyed my disc a few years ago and I've unironically been wanting to play it again.

You just roll with the punches. I dont know why sonic is the only series people expect flawless perfect, industry changing games with.

Repeating lines a billion times was an eggman trademark that came back from SA1 with the "No way I cant believe this", "Get a load of this" etc.
