Yeah, he does a breath attack that hits everyone, does enough damage outright to kill your less meaty party members even at full health, AND inflicts poison. And since poison is serious business in ff10, the party members that do survive the initial attack will almost definitely die anyways unless you stop everything and immediately heal up.
It's real easy for that fight to go very bad very fast.
