Well made hack and slash that has solid combat that carries the entire series. Level design is okay but nothing amazing or genius. Lore is out of your face and vague which makes it more mysterious and interesting.

Everything is good to great but the thing that really nails it for me is the atmosphere. You really do get a sense of relief when you see a bonfire in the distance.

Despite what most people are saying here, the main appeal of Dark Souls is that it lets you explore an interesting world filled with stuff that rewards you for approaching it thoughtfully and exploring it in creative ways. The difficulty is there not to cater to players who are obsessed over challenge, but rather serves mostly to block of parts of the world until you are able to overcome them, which implicitly gives you considerable freedom if you are skilled enough.
