Then like 8 months after N64 Ape Escape came out with the analog sticks and it was game fucking over for that dumbass ergonomic design.

Definitely a simpler time, there is a zero percent chance today that if a controller fucked up that badly would the developer keep the design throughout the lifespan. Think about the OG Xbox and the Duke; it was only a little too big and they tossed out the design. Nintendo should've done something at the time. It was always terrible in practice. And a lot of games required the use of that d-pad/the left trigger on top of the Z-button. Nothing quite like awkwardly moving your hand around that clumsy 3rd handle!

For those not aware, the twist in the controller is extremely precise, to the point where it can be compared to the sensitive and highly accurate nature of an Atari 2600 joystick. It was meant for racing games and, outside of a proper steering wheel set up, it's by far the best way to play racing games. This model of controller is rare and pretty pricy considering that it's only meant to run on a PS1 and PS2. I'm sure it's possible to make it work on PC.

It's a pretty famous design that HORI has long since discontinued. It's an absolutely excellent controller for any game that required minimal use of the d-pad. Too bad it doesn't fix the fucked up southpaw requirements for every N64 FPS, which is bullshit since that console had some pretty good titles. At least Turok finally good ported to PC.
