It probably just means what people have been predicting for months now: They're going with another publisher with a fresh start and most likely not using the SatAM characters again. Sega probably wants to distance themselves from anything remotely Archie related. Personally, I think if it's given to a competent writer a more in-game canon comic would work out quite well in the long run.

If we're talking games, then I don't think nayone wants Sonic to die. In fact most people seem to want both Classic and Modern Sonic alive, at the same time, as separate series. At least that's the impression I'm getting with people complaining about Classic Sonic in Forces while still praising Mania left and right.

As for the comics, these have gone through a lot of tribulations and they didn't even reboot properly. This kind of death isn't even entirely bad. I mean, the comic is known for having a shitload of pointless characters with way more autistic backstory than anyone even cares to know. And that's before we get to hat the COMMUNITY does with them. Sally is to Sonic what Crystal is to Starfox, way too many people on the internet latched to her for furry porn, and even if most comic fans aren't like that, the comic do remind many people of THOSE fans.

Archie couldn't bring themselves to reboot the comic properly. They soft-rebooted it and kept a ton of random ass villains around. Getting rid of the freedom fighters and their weird, deviant baggage might be for the best, so I'm not surprised even sonic fans see this as bittersweet news.

The comics went from good, to ok, to shit, to better, to actually quite nice over the years.
It really depended on who was writing, but it's generally agreed that Penders was the worst while Ian Flynn did the best work.

Overall I'd say they were pretty eh. The bad parts are so godawful that it's almost physically painful to read them, but there's planty of neat stuff in there if you really really like sonic and need more.
Tbh the comic is way too fucking long to bother catching up now unless you've got a lot of freetime to burn and nothing else to do. Especially since it's kill.
