the chiliad mystery was actually fun until PC release when everyone went through the game files and scripts. after that it just became a circle jerk of who could invent the most inane, implausible theory. for example the spiderwebs on your pic are there 24/7, whoever made up that theory just threw that bullshit in. just about everything spoopy in gtaV is easily explained with common sense when you examine it from a game-creators point of view. some people just see patterns that aren't there

CoP is the best game in the series in my opinion, though most of the people in /sg/ will tell me I'm wrong. It takes everything good from CS and ShoC and combines them. Unfortunately, its level design is not as good and it's quite a bit shorter and smaller than ShoC/CS. It also has Call of Chernobyl, which is the best overall mod in the series.

>ShoC is just as easy to break.
The beginning was much more unforgiving and the ending levels were pretty difficult in higher difficulties. CoP was a walk in the park from the beginning.
>Some of them are, some of them aren't.
By default you will only encounter a small group of hostile bandits outside the factory. The rest didn't give a shit about you.
By the way I forgot to mention how broken the faction system is. You cannot turn a faction hostile. Even after completing all Duty quests, for example, Freedom still likes you. Same for stalkers/bandits. I've killed countless of bandits in both Zaton and Jupiter, any subsequent encounter and they were OK with me.
>>
>>384530893
Nimble completely breaks any semblance of balance CoP had.

>start the game for the first time
>go to a few artifact hotspots that are blatantly shown on the map
>sell the useless artifacts (all of them) to the boat guy
>go up to Nimble and buy a sniper rifle and SEVA suit for nothing
>you can buy as much sniper ammo as you want from Owl with no requirements
>am now unstoppable two hours into the game

>>384531159
>ShoC is just as easy to break.
No. The game has well defined regions. You can't get overpowered weapons until after the Bar, and you only get into the Bar early if you want to murder your way in, and you definitely won't know any of this on a first playthrough. There is no hobo phase in CoP.

>Anon, Stalker was about the atmosphere and dealing with the environment.
Stalker is a survival-horror, i.e. forcing the player (You) to deal with a difficult situation (the Zone) and struggle to survive. There is no struggle in CoP. It felt like an arcade shooter at times. And the atmosphere wasn't as good as previous games. Also
>dealing with the environment
Something that really bothers me is that they decided to regroup anomalies into clusters rather than putting them at random throughout the level, which made it hazardous to just run forward because you could get caught into a vortex in no time. Also radiation barely does damage unless you actually catch a large amount.

weirdly enough (or not weirdly, depending on your point of view) that part of the game wasn't creepy to me in the slightest.

At that point in the game you're (hopefully) the master of the zone, not just in terms of gear but in that you've developed supreme confidence in your ability to handle any situation, no matter how shitty.

The visual effects, the constant mounting radiation, the voice effects, my brain just filtered everything out because it was just a silly distraction in my quest to murder everyone in my way.

The second area in Valley of Defilement in Demon's Souls. I know a lot of people hate it because its a huge poison swamp and they're overdone in the series, but that particular area, with the rain, and that weird death rattle-esque breathing the enemies do, and the fact that it seems like you're descending into some filthy abyss, makes it very unsettling for me. The atmosphere is so dense.

AVP1 was fucking BRUTAL as the marine because the alien ai was truly free roaming. The levels didn't have spawn points, but basically had all the aliens preloaded from the word go, and they would proceed to track you down in real time via the pc alien's preysense however they could.
It meant that you never actually knew where an alien or facehugger was going to come from, and every playthru would be different in terms of what kind of combat you'd deal with. You could easily run into single aliens an entire level, then the next time, have a fucking gangbang of 20 of them drop in on you all at once because they managed to sense you around the same time.
Gotta watch every vent, every door and crate. Doom 3 would have benefitted from that kind of ai set up, rather than set piece jump scares.

>The beginning was much more unforgiving and the ending levels were pretty difficult in higher difficulties
You can find a sunrise and AK within the first five seconds of starting ShoC if you know where to look, and at the end of the game the ability to stack artifacts into oblivion makes everything you encounter in the plant totally trivial.
>You cannot turn a faction hostile.
Yes you can. You turn the bandits in Zaton hostile if you kill some of them in the mission to ambush Spartacus (if you don't shoot, you won't turn them hostile). IIRC you can also turn the bandits in Jupiter hostile by getting the One of Ours achievement. And as far as I remember you do turn either Freedom or Duty hostile if you kick one or the other out of Yanov (there is an achievement for avoiding this).

You guys should replay (patched) vanilla ShoC. The game is piss easy since you know what you're doing. You remember it being harder because it doesn't hold your hand for as long as CoP does and you already knew what you were getting into by CoP.

That isn't the fucking same at all

CoP you spawn in with an AK, instantly guides you towards a nearby anomaly area, and gives you the artifact scanner so money will already be a non issue for extra med packs and ammo and effectively showing you, all you need to make money is to go to any of these areas already marked on your map and collect artifacts so you can instantly start ordering overpowered weapons and gear from the vendor in the starting hub

ShoC heaps artifacts on you from the very beginning. Money is never an issue in either game, and ShoC has more gear that is actually unbalanced (minigun? gauss rifle?) basically available from the moment you open the way to the Bar. You are imagining greater difficulty onto ShoC because you didn't know what you were gettting into when you first played it.

As you know, each vault masqueraded as a shelter from the apocalypse, and instead was a great experimental project set up by Vault Tec.

Vault 22 was given the gift of a sort of highly fertile agricultural experiment straight from the hub of the worlds' finest minds, Big Mountain (a DLC in the game, you can find ground zero of this particular vault disaster).

With the expansion of the spores emitted to cultivate and give growth to the plantation inside the vault, came the eventual, and agonizing, transformation of the vault residents into what amounts to essentially cannibalistic plant-zombies. They lie in rest and waiting for any intruders and the whole place is a void of creepiness, and danger literally sprouting at your feet.

Another similar strain of this experiment was found at Zion Canyon, Utah.

As a kid, I got lost in the Mystic Ruins for hours. I would keep finding the same researchers, who were also lost. I became frustrated trying to find my way out. I knew I was just going in circles because I kept finding the same researchers. I started remembering their dialog and used them to make a rough map of the paths. But then their dialog started changing. They started saying different things that I never heard before. They talked about their lives, about things they regret, people they loved. Their new lines never repeated and they seemed to never run out of lines.

It's strange because when I got the game as an adult (PC DX version), the Mystic Ruins area seems a lot smaller. I have no idea how I got lost for hours in there and the researchers only say the same one or two lines no matter how many times you interact with them.

Came here to say this. Funny part is it wouldn't count as 'unsettling' as much as terrifying, but once you've seen it for yourself THIS view is the unsettling part because you know what's coming.

So I'll post New Londo Ruins. The place genuinely freaks me out in the best way.

Yeah, the intensity of the shootouts is still something I don't think many other games have been able to replicate for me. The motel shootout will always have a special place for me - that's some real intensive shit.
>Should I try out the later Mafia games if I loved the first one?
I wouldn't really recommend it, depends on how much you're in the mood for a gangster game. I played Mafia 2 when it came out, and while it's not bad, it failed to make a lasting impression. Mafia 3 I steered clear off for obvious reasons.

A lot of Dark Souls 1 areas in general fill me with this unnerving sense of dread, Ash Lake probably being the biggest offender of this. Its a shame From has never really been able to recreate this sensation in any of their other games

They struck gold with the relatively primitive graphical style, the limits actually leave just enough to the imagination to be unsettling as shit with enough detail to repulse you on a base level. The sound design on its own is better and more subtle than almost all the horror games I've ever played and the soundtrack is almost entirely unique, drawing on so many varied influences that it's practically a new genre of music on its own.
Not to mention all of it is backed up by a story with an insane amount of substance, unfortunately the way it's communicated to the player can make it difficult to comprehend. I just fucking love the game

Most of Fallout NV is very easy. Vault 34 is the one exception. The one place where the developers actually try to kill you. The whole vault is full of radiation, and everytime you open a med kit to try and reduce your radiation sickness, the game spawns some gholes with 400 health in the nearest doorway behind you.

Towards the end of Stalker CoP, you have to break into this locked up house with a bunch of psy emissions and spooky shit going on (I think poltergeists).
Anyway, its a school and they used wall art from an actual school in Pripyat.
And it seems innocent enough, but there's one point where you go through a door or turn a corner or something and that's right in your face.
