Release order is the ONLY way you should even consider it. Gameplay is pretty much the same in all games, with relatively small improvements every time. The story and specially character development is very important in all games and later titles reference it constantly, so you'd me missing a considerable part of the experience by skipping any of the non-spin-off games.
It's a wild ride and by the time you're in 5, you feel like you know so many of these characters who have been with you for so long just as good as Kiryu does.

1, 2 ,3 ,4 ,5 ,0 and 6 when it releases.

I personally would switch Going Commando with Deadlocked there. RC1 is a fun platformer with some TPS elements and doesn't require much from the player. RC3 is practically a pure TPS and has all these nice QOL things like multiple weapon wheels and different control schemes and a strafe that isn't shit. RC2 is this weird transition where it tries to be 50/50 and doesn't feel very refined. The humor isn't nearly as good as 1 and 3 either.

You can upgrade cards into better cards. Some cards even transform into entirely new cards (like Master Miller turns into Liquid Snake, Grey Fox into Cyborg Ninja).
When replaying a mission, you can pick a challenge map instead of the challenge being random
You no longer need to end a movement phase to crawl/stand up
A battle arena mode where you can fight MGS bosses that use decks to replicate their fighting style
Probably fixed/improved equipment cards but I never used them. I always used the weapons that didn't require me to equip a card.
Juggle Physics (the Rumble Roses people worked on the female models)

Overall a straight up improvement that doesn't require knowing MGA1

All the new items and trinkets are uninspired and really add nothing to the game. 5 new pickups, only two of which are actually beneficial. (Other three are red hearts that flee from you, Mimic chests, and a FUCKING PUNISHMENT FOR REROLLING, where restarting 7 runs in succession puts half spirit hearts in your save permanently).

New character is just a shittier Isaac with a spacebar that eats other items, which either grants stats or makes the spacebar effect proc next time you use Apollyon's active item (which you never do, because it's 6 charge and you'll be saving that charge to eat another item). Also added a bunch of boring enemies and a fucking enemy spawner that has to be the most aggressively boring mechanic added to a game in history.
New bosses are huge jumps in difficulty (similar to regular Afterbirth) that make the game more of a slog to play. There's a new final boss (A cool idea, won't spoil it for you. Look it up if you want to know), but it's not as interesting as the other available final bosses and the new chapter to go along with it, no joke, just takes appearances from other chapters at random per room. Lazy.
On the bright side, the game added new challenges that, when completed, permanently buff certain characters (Anemic on first life Lazarus, PermaAnemic on second life Laz, Speed Up pill on Maggy, Child's Heart start on Samson). There's also a victory lap option upon killing The Lamb that lets you replay the game with all your items again, which let me kill Mega Satan on my second-ever Mom's Heart fight (thanks Sacrifice Rooms). For some retarded reason, however, Victory Laps can only be done on Lamb Kills, and not any other final boss, but can be done repeatedly given you kill Lamb every time.

When there's a fan expansion that's not compatible with Afterbirth+, and people choose the fan one over the official one, you know something went wrong.
