it really doesn't matter. On UMvC3 for example there were characters that simply weren't viable like Hsien-ko or Iron Fist and they didn't even have good assists to compensate either. Instead we got Doom who was a very competent character and also had some of the most useful assists in the game.

It isn't over dramatic like the show. Ugh, I am going on a rant about XV2 now aren't I? Apologies, back to the actual topic.

From the screenshot, it looks like Hibiki from Blazblue works the same way. He has a special move where two images of him charge at the opponent, and depending on whether the player hit the light or strong attack button, one of the two will be a fake, and the other will perform an attack. The opponent has to guess whether the incoming attack is a sweep or an overhead, which is great for mixups.

Sounds great to me. MvC always had characters who ended up stronger on assist like Hsien-ko. This design plan opens up more space on character variety and will probably be healthy for variety in tournaments.

If you have a lot of similarly balanced characters you just end up with a situation where the 51% win rate sees way more play than the 49%because their distinctions aren't deep enough. If a character averages 10% but has some amazing niche they'll see play on merit of what they counter or their utility.

Kid Chichi might be kind of fun, but Bulma has no real purpose being in a fighting game. And Videl would only be good as Great Saiyawoman. Certainly wouldn't mind that, but it's a really unlikely choice.
