Why are game file sizes so big these days?

No attention given to optimization or compression.

I am annoyed to find that launching Steam has greeted me with a 34.7GB update to DOOM. I am never going to play the online yet id software feels the need to steal even more of my SSD.
SEVENTY SIX gigabytes??
What the fuck?! That is outrageous

Oh god you're right, I forgot about that cancerous online portion, the beta for that was so trash.

ID software has been bragging about their super cool texture sizes, so it's not really shocking.
Woah....it's almost as if technology moves forward or something...
>Bought Black Desert Online on launch
>Decide to play it the other day
>84 GB update
>Uninstall
uncompressed textures cause everyone has 4k capability right? Also uncompressed audio and FMVs. They think it stops pirates, and it did, before repacks started being a thing. fuck you rockstar, and fuck you max payne 3.

I really wish Valve and the console manufacturers would do something about this shit. I own the PC and PS4 versions of DOOM and they're taking an additional 35GB of my PC SSD and 24GB of my PS4 hard drive for something I will never play.
A 4TB HDD is 120 dollars nowadays, why not buy one?

because I don't want to wait 10 minutes for DOOM to load. I only game on SSDs and this is 50GB of bullshit that I don't care about being taken from my SSD. Why should I be forced to buy more storage to fit content I can't even opt out of, since Steam doesn't let you disable game updates?
