It's an objectively worse experience, and you'd be doing yourself a disservice if it's your only exposure to the game. However, as a suppliment to the normal game it makes for an interesting replay thanks to some gameplay/presentation changes and graphical improvements.

As much as it hurts to say, I think you're right. If there was going to be a sequel, Square would have made it already, and the fanbase is much too small for them to resurrect a decade-old franchise just because the fans want it. If Square actually came out with a sequel now, they would probably have to tweak aspects of the original game to make it appeal more to the Kingdom Hearts demographic, which is one of the many things that TWEWY tried to distance itself from.

Eh. I felt it wasn't all that good. It was like a simpler Hotel Dusk for children but without the style or atmosphere.

Also the sequel sucked, I still can't believe how unnecessary and tacked on its plot was, and how obvious it was that they had no idea how to handle some plot lines which just magically autoresolve or get dropped at the end.

I've had a similar idea for a while now:
>set 5 to 10 years after the original game, perhaps in a different ward of Tokyo
>new cast of characters, Neku and friends are rarely (if ever) seen
>protagonist is anti-social, much like Neku but in a different way; maybe he's a hikki who is forced to interact with people after "entering" the reaper's game
Doesn't even need to be set on an "alternate plane," just have the game take place in a different era where Neku no longer has influence on the story.

Meh, most of those things aren't even worth having in the first place. If you're playing the DS version, there's a glitch that lets you cheese the whole "earn exp while the game is off" feature. Basically you just have to set the system's clock a year ahead, and when you load your save file, all your pins will have gained the maximum amount of exp possible in that amount of time (I think it caps out after a week, but adjusting the year is easier lol). Some of the best pins in the game (that are otherwise mind-numbingly difficult to obtain) can be earned very easily this way.
