You have to go back.

I love text based "games" :3

((((anon doesnt know that most games in the industry are used making one of those or heavily modified one))))

What are the rules on money?
I heard Unity takes all your money after the first 10,000 or something like that.
Thinking of starting a project soon and cant decide on enjin.

Just use Unreal or anything else besides Unity. Stop fucking supporting that shitty engine.

If you sell a certain amount of games for unreal then you have to start paying them, of cousre I dont know for how long though. If you make over a certain amount of money with the Unity engine then there are fees to pay too

Ori is one of my favorite games and the exception is that 2D games can look nice on it. Ori does not run well, though. It runs well for me because I have a GTX 970, but there are plenty of people who can't play this on toasters simply because of the terrible engine used. Hollow Knight is the same way.

Is Roblox really a game engine now? I remember when it was just a fun game where you could build shit with "not Legos" and had the option of adding Lua scripts and shit.
>>
>>384497881
This really has nothing to do with the engine though, it is to do with people running modern games on toasters. If the devs choose their min spec to be higher than your shitty pc then that's the minimum level it will run at.
>>
>>384497963

C++, so yes
>>
>>384497479
they're both from unity
>>
>>384498196
>nothing to do with the engine though, it is to do with people running modern games on toasters
That's problem exactly because the engine is too bloaty to run on old systems, not because the game should be heavy to run.
>>
>>384498196
This is the typical attitude of developers using the Unity engine, though. They just plug their ears and go "LALALALA" at any performance complaints. Subnautica and 7 Days to Die will always have that massive stuttering as the level is loading, even though Subnautica isn't even procedurally generated. You're talking about a modern engine, but it can't even do modern things like that properly. It's limited to 2D games and 3D strategy games, it can never and will never load shit on the fly with hiccups.
>>
>>384498084
well, I think we have a winner then. Not even defending toaster poorfags like myself but if your engine runs on more computers you get more sales. It's a simple fact

I really hope it takes over. I want to see UE4 finally put a nail in the coffin for this horrible engine. If you're not gonna make your own engine, at least use one that isn't shit. I say that, and yet people still use it for no reason.

Does UE have a mascot?
>>
unreal

unity is always laggy unoptimized shit
>>
>>384499000
Neither seem to fuck over devs too much, which is why they're popular. Unity, however, fucks over the players because the game is shittier in at least a few ways than it could have been on another engine.
>>
>>384496364
Remember the last time an AAA dev wasted millions and years making and learnign their own engine, only for it to look and run like shit only for them to switch to UE in shame later on?
>>
UE4 is free and superior to Unity in every way and form. There is no excuse to be using Unity garbage anymore.
>>
Is UE4 suitable for lowpoly games? I wanna hit that PS1 aesthetic.
>>
Name three 2017 indie games build with UE.
>>
>>384499462
C# is easier to learn than C++
>>
>>384499000
>Unity fucks over players with it's shit engine
>Unreal fucks over developers with their 5% royalties
>>
It's nice to see /v/ shitting all over Unity again. It seemed like the hivemind was warming up to it a bit despite it still being trash.
>>
>>384499651
This, also C# is a beautiful language and C++ isn't.
>>
>>384499657
5% doesn't seem like very much. UE4 does a whole lot for your development, while online stores take 30%. Still seems to work out in the end.
>>
>>384497679
Well you pay them a small portion of the profits which is more than fair, especially comparing 5% or whatever it is to the 30% Steam takes but then you can mentally justify the latter by the simple fact that you'll always make more by having it on Steam than not (unless maybe you're EA or Ubisoft) and Steam also provides various services that could be integral to a game, which unfortunately you can't choose not to pay for but whatever.

Unreal has the right idea, they do well in making the devs do well, they have countless tutorials and an active community. You can sell your stuff on the marketplace if you want or need. You can actually get started with 3D right away contrary to popular belief. I'm still fucking amazed every time I learn stuff how much stuff makes sense, at least provided you at least have some basic programming skills. Blueprints are literally magic.

I tried Unity and didn't like everything about the interface right away, I didn't get much into it beyond a few tutorials but to each their own.
>>
>>384496624
UE4 runs like shit though.
>>
2D/2.5D Platformers, basic 3D games, games where graphics aren't terribly important or a low-poly graphics style is used: Unity
Graphically intensive games: Unreal Engine
It's all about graphical intensity, people.
>>
>Unreal Engine
>+ Very graphic oriented
>+Easy to use
>- Input lag

>Unity Engine
>+Wide crossplatform engine
>+Multipli support for different codings.
>- Less options for input controls

Optimizing is a developer thing not Engine based.
>>
>>384498084
ue4 doesn't run on my toaster while i can play unity games and use the unity engine.
>>
>>384500298
>Unreal Engine
>Easy to use

Yeah, once you learned it, and it's great. Miles better than Unity. But learning it is a pain in the ass. Not the coding or blueprints. All the features and how to PROPERLY use them.
I'm a programmer and I've been using Unreal for 2 years now. I'm still struggling with lighting, Sometimes it just doesn't work like it's supposed to.

Doesn't matter. Give me good games.

Whining about the engine is about as bad as digging into Nintendo or Sony's financial statements and flailing around. Nobody should give a fuck but the developers.
>>
>>384500995
and yet it wasn't, which makes your post retarded and petty.
>>
>>384499429
People at Square Enix can't into engine for shit, they should learn some stuff or two from MT Framework or Fox Engine.
>>
>>384499469
Why not? Although it may be depending on what kind of game you plan to make or how it'll be presented and designed technically or graphically.
>>
>>384499462
Unity is easier to learn and use, although i think UE is better choice for non-solo dev team.
>>
>>384501773
Third person shooter like Resident Evil or Max Payne.
>>
Lumberjack
>>
>>384496215
I fucking hate blueprints so much. It severs documentation into two incompatible halves, and certain things are so much harder to do in one way than the other that it feels like a trap that the engine even lets you.
>>
>>384499469
yes, thats more to do with your models/textures and less to do with the engine
>>
>>384499939
