If it's part of an overall expansion which does a major rebalance, adds new mechanics and backgrounds, and other things for a reasonable price it's... Acceptable. I didn't mind paying for SSFIV:AE or USFIV. At least then I was getting a fairly complete package.

SFV's model is a fucking joke and I dropped the game a while ago. Not even Karin in a glorious fucking bikini was able to keep me interested in that dumpster fire.

Maybe when Capcom gets its shit together and releases a "GOTY" version of SFV with all the currently-released characters and costumes, I'll double-dip and get back into it. But for now, fuck them for all the nickle and dime bullshit.

Usually, new characters introduced to a fighting game are part of the base game. They have no value to anyone because they're new and unfamiliar. Over time they're usually accepted by their respective communities.
Brand new characters as DLC is a much harder sell. There's no name value. Besides a 30 second highlight reel, nobody knows how they play, what the character is really like, or anything about them really. So it leaves most people scratching their heads and wondering, "where are the characters i'm familiar with? who is this new guy and why should i care?"
It's not that the new character is straight up bad like abigail most of the time, its that its not an old favorite from a past game that people wanted back.
Also, the fact that new characters are still being introduced in SFV when player 2 still can't select "rematch" after a versus game and your gameplay is wack, makes people even more upset

In SFIV, with each iteration the entire community got the entire "package" all at once, and even then, the entire game with all the characters unlocked cost $150+tax from OG SFIV all the way out to USFIV, and that was over the course of years. Sure, there were cosmetic costume packs, but they didn't divide the community.

Compare this to SFV, which only fucking came out last year: $70 for the base game, $20 for the S1 pass, $30 for the S2 pass, and we're at $120 in the first fucking year unless you're doing "Dailies and weeklies" and spending time uselessly fighting the AI in survival mode like it's a fucking MMO and not a fighting game.

Capcom's model here is bullshit and doesn't deserve to be rewarded.

Capcom offers the most money to anyone willing to participate in their tournaments. If you are a pro player and invest time in SFV, you can make much more money than if you were playing Tekken 7, Rev 2, etc. And wherever the most pro players go is where the community support goes. SFV can afford to be shit, while better games go underplayed because their money offerings are too low

I was invested enough in USFIV that by the time SFV came out I'd purchased it on PS3, X360, and Steam just so I could play with all my friends on different platforms.

Soul Calibur V is guilty of this bigtime.
Game played fine but nobody stuck to it because a large chunk of the cast was gone and none of the new characters were particularly appealing.

The best new character in SC was the weird guy from the PSP game for crying out loud.

No. New characters are always welcome. Who knows, maybe a new fan favorite will happen. Innovation should be the priority always. Tekken is failing in that regard, only introducing old characters or characters from other games.

But that new sfv character is garbage. Awful design. It reminds me how ed boon is always trying to come up with new characters for MK, but the designs are always terrible (see MK4 roster)

If you were to actually think about it, these characters are just functions. They're just doing things. Hugo, case and point, is a favorite because he is a big guy for you and he has armor out the ass, right? So our more technical players, all they want to do is run through Ryu's shinku hadouken and that kind of stuff. Well guess what, Abigail can do the same thing, Abigail's left arm can do the same thing. Abigail's right arm can do the same thing. Go ahead and try them out.

Honestly I think the Street fighter V format is great for a fighting game. The dev keep gaining budgets to update the game and the means to unlock the new content isn't that hard. But Street fighter V with very barebones content. I came back to it am having fun doing all the trials, story introductions and online matches now.
