Kingdom hearts was a good game mechanically back in 2001 when barely any games had as good controls. Note I said as good, which doesnt mean KH has good controls because while they worked for combat, platforming was a bitch, and the original kingdom hearts threw a lot of platforming mechanics at the player.

KH2FM especially has some very well designed mechanics that work together and allow for many different build options. The data battles are a great example of how fun the game can be when you put the combat system to its limits.
