The gunplay model is actually amazing. The problem is that first half of the game intentionally gives you gimped weapons, and introduces some hidden mechanics that do make sense from a gameplay-perspective, but not really from common sense one and the game does not inform you of them.

But really, it's just the weapon progression curve that screws people over the most.

FPS game vet here, gunplay in SoC is objectively bad. Even on Master all weapons feel like peashooters and headshots are mandatory. Realistic ballistics are fine and all, but don't make the shootan less shit. The game only got great shooting mechanics in CoP.

Unmodded it is an absolute abortion that should've never seen the light of day. With mods, it is a 5/10 that is a rough draft of an actual RPG

STALKER SoC (vanilla) is good but you really need mods to really enjoy it and a newbie wouldn't know that. CoP (vanilla) is a much better experience.

Beyond the typical exposition dump from a god-like entity?
The final level is absolutely beautiful, one of the craziest looking levels I've ever seen. And they fucking funnel you through TELEPORT portals so you can't freely traverse this amazing huge level. I'm so fucking angry about that. On top of that, the only thing you fight are monolith goons with 2 snorks sprinkled in for good measure.

This is determined by the difficulty level and affects your enemies as well. On Master, if you score a hit you score a hit. The reason this was so infuriating on difficulties below master is because the starting guns already have shit tier accuracy so on TOP of compensating for spread you would be simply not hitting half of your shots anyway.

Funny you should bring up stalker. I got it in a sale a long time ago and never got into it. I started it up randomly after reinstalling windows onto a bigger hard drive and installing many steam games that I might want to play. Stalker is the game in which I for the first time ever enjoyed RPG mechanics because there were none.
It always bothered me how in many games they try to have it both ways. They want to let you do the fighting action style, but they tie you down to arbitrary numbers like the character has skills and stats disconnected from you. So you end up in a situation where only grinding can let you kill the biggest bads that are i.distinguishable from smaller bads.
In stalker you don't kill for arbitrary xp, you kill to take their guns and bullets and if you don't need them you can walk away feeling you miss nothing.
An AK is as good of a weapon as you need to finish the game everithing is as mortal as it should be provided you put a bullet in it's skull.
Yet the game maintains a clear curve where you feel more and more powerful as you progress.
It's briliant.

Difficulty has NO effect player's accuracy in any of the Stalker games. It only affects enemy health, enemy accuracy, and some of their damage resistances.

First of all: they don't. The game just does induce a massive damage reduction on shots connecting shortly one after another, counting only the first hit of a series as full damage.
Which applies to ALL DIFFICULTIES and to both player and all enemies. Master difficulty has zero impact on this. It just bloats up enemy health and damage reductions and increases their accuracy. Nothing else.

What is the source for this? Genuinely everything I've seen and read, including friends who are veterans of the Stalker games and my own personal experience with the game, line up with what I said. I'm not saying this is wrong but I'd like to see this get backed up with something.
I remember being stuck in the Garbage for a long fucking time because I was convinced I could kill the entire bandit army with the starting pistol and I legitimately couldn't hit a single thing. I turned the difficulty to Master and was ripping through them shortly afterwards

You only needed ZRP with all vanilla settings to never experience any bugs or crashes. The rest of that stuff you're talking about just isn't true.

- A.I. is not inconsistent, it's varied. It's not perfect, but probably the best you'll find 9 games out of 10. It's definitely an example of good A.I. Especially because the game is minimally scripted.
- Enemies can see you at the same distance you can see them. Boo fucking hoo. You CAN be sneaky, but you must consider visibility and noise.
- I am 40 hours in and I've never had enemies respawn on top of me. They respawn after you've left the area, or so late that it doesn't matter, maybe. It doesn't normally happen. And this isn't the type of game where you loot everything. You take a look at what the corpse has on it, and you grab what you need.
- There are only a few "fetch quests" like that, and there are many good ones. Also this game has emergent gameplay and fetch quests help facilitates that.
- Linear compared to what other game?
- I have the most basic installation possible: Windows 10, steam version, ZRP bugfix mod, and I never experience bugs, or if I do, they're the kind you'd have to be a long time player to recognize.

You get to CNPP expecting a massive sprawling complex filled with horrible mutants giant anomalies deadly radiation, etc. Instead you get inside and then you run through a corridor filled with 30 monolith soldiers and then you get a cutscene. Outside of the terrible level and encounter design in CNPP, the thing that got to me the most is just how terrible and lame the fucking actual story fucking explanation is.
People rag on how stupid Lost Alpha's story is - but it's actually almost completely faithful to the original. It's the original that is DUMB AS ALL FUCK in the end.

It starts out so interesting with this cold-war body-horror vibe to it, but then it basically goes literal Evangelion and all of it in a awful poorly voiced and poorly written in-game-engine cutscene.

God knows I love Stalker games but the end SoC is fucking attrocious. Actually, pretty much everything after you shut down the Miracle Machine near Yantar is pretty terrible.

I really liked the red forest and the scorcher complex actually (although the actual underground part to the scorcher was also just a corridor). Pripyat is cool too but by then you start to get bored with fighting the same groups of monolith over and over
