Why is this game so shit compared to other in the series?
>>384455171
Ubisoft
I thought IX was the black sheep
>>384455535
have you played x?
>>384455703
Not yet, IX was the last I played and didn't get that far into it
I've only played IX, it was okay, buggy af but.
The twist at the end was kinda amusing, literally trolled by the gods.
>>384455703
Not him but I have, X is superior in every way.
>>384455171
because JVC had nothing to do with it.
>>384456290
RIP New World Computing
>>384455703
i did, X aside from whole ubi setting change to MM is better
>IX
What were they thinking?
7 > 3 > 6 > 4/5 > 2 > 1 > 8 > 10 > 9
Prove me wrong.
I've never played any of the others, but I'm going to take a guess at shit level design being the main reason.
>Opening a door takes the player's turn
>Literally every door in the game has an enemy archer behind it that gets a free shot at the player when they open the door
>>384457405
>3 that high
>2 and 1 above anything
7 > 6 > 8 > 4/5 > 10 > 9 > 2 > 1
>>384457512
this game is litteraly ambush and shit optimization
9 was my first M&M and it wasn't that bad, lay it on me.
>>384457551
>9 above anything
3 is fucking kino and the console ports of 1 and 2 are fantastic.
>enter the carnival area in IX
>every NPC turned into a grey untextured model in T-pose
>and they're all hovering 30 feet above the ground
>what was obviously a very strange bug looked like some eerie rapture event for my young self
>>384457551
>I got the late 90s trilogy in a box set and never actually played the others: The post
>>384458040
Let's get real. M&M 6, 7, 8, 9 are absolutely unique games with the only other contender in history being Wizardry 8. Other M&M games are standard dungeon crawlers of which we have hundreds.
>>384455171
>compared to other in the series?
I guess you haven't played 9?
10 isn't the greatest, but it's definitely a big step up from what came before.
What didn't you folks like in 9?
>>384458402
M&M9 is uniquely garbage. 8 was nothing spectacular despite some good ideas due to a rushed release and don't pretend you'd touch it today without the grayface patch. 6 and 7 we can absolutely agree on. 1 and 2 are standard blobbers because standard blobbers were still fresh at the time, but they're very good standard blobbers. Terra and Xeen are anything but standard and Terra is especially underrated.
AH-HA!
>>384455535
Never play IX but is it true that you have to kill yourself at one point in the game? Because that sounds like some edgy shit.
X wasn't that bad. It also came like 12 years after the IX so I wouldn't really compare to the earlier games. It's even set in the setting of the fifth HoMM game, and is made by different people.
The game is still a decent dungeon crawler, a genre that is pretty much dead. It's not as good as Legend of Grimrock but I still got a good playthrough out of it.
>>384457405
I see you like player strongholds
>>384459131
HA HAAAAA
>>384455171
>/v/ demand old school game
>game with old school style released
>everyone shit on it and got forgotten
I play this game until the end, and its really what you ask for oldschool game. Wtf you guys want??
>>384458889
>8 was nothing spectacular despite some good ideas due to a rushed release and don't pretend you'd touch it today without the grayface patch
Just gonna jump in and say I would absolutely play the game if only for the character creation options, interesting take on party members (balance be damned), and absolutely fantastic starting area
>>384459550
The problem was that it built upon the gameplay style of 3-5, when there's plenty of tile-based dungeon crawlers out there already, new and old.
What they should have done is built upon the style of 6-8, big open free environments and Serious Sam levels of enemies on screen.
I enjoyed my time with legacy but man was it a fucking mess. I replayed it a few months ago and they still haven't fixed a copy protection bug where the game doesn't let you move on to the next area after the first real dungeon because it thinks the game is pirated.

i never understood the reasoning why blackguards are now the strongest enemies in the universe in this game, when in dark messiah they were the weakest enemies.
>>384460368
>Dem dungeons with shit tons of casters that just become a jumble of sound effects.
As a direct opposite to that enjoy an acoustic cover of Moonlit Snow Journey.

>>384455171
I dont know OP, I actually enjoyed it AND older M&M games.
M&M X was actually very fun to play. I love turn-based, grid-based crawlers. The only problem I saw was random loot combined with no enemies/chests respawning.
>>384459937
>plenty of tile-based dungeon crawlers out there already, new and old.
List the new ones for PC then, please. I couldnt find any. Except for this and previous year releases of japanese console ports to PC.

IX was a right state but I never had that myself, funny though
>>384459676
Obviously these scrubs dont recall Rolling around with a minotaur, vampire, lich and dragon in your crew.
Also the character soundbytes in 8 are unmatched.
>>384459268
You have to visit Asgard which of course requires you to be dead silly.
>>384455171
>Why is this game so shit compared to other in the series?
contractual obligation made by foreign interns
IX was pretty shit, too.
>>384461668
The Quest, Heroes of Monkey Tavern, the Grimrock games to name a few.
Granted they are mostly indie efforts but there are plenty out there.
>>384462114
>pick minotaur
>can't equip footwear
it's the little things
>>384462114
>not rolling troll
>>384462387
Grimrock is in real-time, thats whole different game (I disliked it, to be honest - I prefer turn-based instead of nervously clicking on portraits).
Also, the first two games you listed were released much after M&M X. I was just saying that I didnt really had competition on PC back then. And Im sorry but The Quest looks really shitty and cheap. Its not like I value graphics above all else, its just that it looks very cheap.
>>384462629
>Grandmaster Mace
Won't lie though, regeneration was very attractive
>>384463156
>not wanting to stun every third attack
>>384462629
Troll is probably the best starting character.
>>384463246
>in a game that throws scores of enemies at you
I'd rather do them in and run
>>384463408
you have a point there, I just fucking like trolls man and there is not enough of them in games
>>384463408
Throws scores of enemies at you.
Gives you spells like starburst and armageddon. God I fucking love those games.
>>384463658
>tfw in M&M 7 aoe spells were present really late in game and very weak compared to melee fights
>that fireball spells burning out your sorc mana reserves quickly and losing sense after getting into closer range aka after first two rounds
;_;
>>384464241
But then one of the best "melee" attacks was Sparks.
>>384464464
I tried using it - always dealing little damage and in 3/4 of cases I was the onle taking damage instead, for some reason. Bugs or something? I only learned to NOT use sparks at all or my party wold be dead within seconds.
>>384463512
Well aye, if I was asked for games with playable trolls it'd answer
>M&M8
>WoW
>???
Think they might be too locked into the baddie role
Remember those complete 'fuck you' traps in mm6? That one well that you drink from that teleports you into a room filled with minoaturs. Damn I miss those moments in games.
>>384464464
Sparks is the goat early level spell. Small damage, across the board
Does what it says on the tin however you look at it
>>384458040
Wrong anon, I played all of them, well 1-3 I only played for a couple hours each and couldn't get into them due to how fucking dated they were.
Loved World of Xeen (is how I experienced 4 and 5) and then played the rest in order.
>Console ports
Elaborate, I played the PC versions, I may give them another chance if there's not utter shit versions around somewhere.

>age 29 out of 26
Does that mean shes dead? Or is there a 3 year old fetus in her belly.
>>384460532
Dark Messiah is like thousand of years later in the lore.
>>384465609
She was magically aged. Highest tier specters can do that.
>>384465609
She done tangled with a ghost and they aged her
>>384465609
I'll call it ghost-touch, you'll get felt up by certain enemies (undead) and that's the effect
>>384465694
>>384465609
Magically aged above her normal age, yeah.
>Highest tier specters can do that.
Also harpies. There is black potion to cure that but it spawns randomly in one or two shops in game and age effects dont kick in until around 40s or 50s so it doesnt matter unless you dick around for REALLY long or fight mentioned monsters without protection for too long.
Age was not really that important in M&M& 7, unlike M&M 1-5 games.
>>384461485
Which M&M is this one anon? Don't have much exp on these ones
>>384465629
Doesn't it also take place in that other setting with all the silly elemental dragons?
>>384466334
Yes, it's in the Ubisoft universe, but so is Dark Messiah.
>>384466330
7th.
>>384466330
The only "3D" ones are 6/7/8/9/10
>>384466334
Dark Messiah happens right after HOMM 5, which I think takes place on a different planet than HOMM 1-3 and the M&M games because the old one blew up in HOMM 3.
>>384466330
Aye that's VII. The one that follows the same format but looks like actual people is VI, and it's fantastic
>>384466695
So much fucking wrong it hurts.
H4 is the one that takes place on a different planet but still in NWC's universe. Namely on Axeoth, which is also where M&M9 takes place.
H5 is in an entirely new universe after Ubisoft immediately rebooted the franchise completely following buying the rights to M&M.
Dark Messiah happens sometime after events of H5. H6 takes place couple centuries before H5 and M&M10 is somewhere between H6 and H5 in chronology. Nothing exists after Dark Messiah sincedestruction ending is canon.
>>384462127
>You have to visit Asgard which of course requires you to be dead silly.
No, it does not, you simply have to cross the bifröst.
You are thinking of valhalla, which would be also wrong, since, yes, the valkyries only take the honorable fallen there to become einherjar, but it is not written that only the dead go to valhalla either.
Valkyries are very much alive, for instance.
>>384466826
I really disliked the "life" portraits of VI. All of them looked like ugly or like cheap cosplay.
>>384466994
>M&M10 is somewhere between H6 and H5 in chronology
Actually, its closely after Heroes 6, when new emperess finally makes religion and state separation after revelations from 6.
>>384468648
I thought as much just didn't remember exactly how long after H6 it was since I played it like 2 years ago.
>>384468843
You know, I only checked the plot of H6 because I couldnt stand its shitty gameplay and "ancient fedora slav masters" storyline.
Kinda like "we want Persona audience" with angels being bad guys.
>>384469135
Not that anon but I really liked the sanctuary gameplaywise someone should make a decent mod and port them in H5.
I love blobbers, but I fucking hate how all of the old school forerunners have obtuse UI. Are there any TURN-BASED blobbers with a 4-man party that aren't bogged down by design decisions of yore?
>>384469621
I thought the old inerface was intuitive desu
