Do what he recommends but I suggest starting at around 3000 calories per day and reducing that to 2500 after a month and 2000 a month after.
Counting calories is the key to weight loss (I did it myself) but the major pitfalls is starting too strongly and ruining your metabolism due to your body going into starvation mode. Or starting too strongly and both going into starvation mode and also giving up.
The solution is to not eat such a low amount of calories (especially for your weight) but to slowly go down from a high amount to a lower amount.
1500 calories is too low for any man I'd say, 2500 is usually maintenance for normal people that do a little cardio. 2000 for fast weight loss (especially if you also lift and do cardio during that time)
