I suppose in terms of character I'd have to go with Shodan. In terms of "I really, really, really do not want to be recognized by this character as an antagonist," AM is clearly the winner. He's basically the god of the entire fucking earth for what its worth, and the lack of purpose and stimulation have driven him absolutely fucking insane. There is no end game for AM. there's barely even a game, he just pokes at 5 bags of meat just to ignore the pointlessness of it all.

In terms of thematic development, I think The Patriots and Icarus (as well as Daedalus, Helios and even Morpheus) are more relevant and interesting both as characters and for what they have to say about the world. I haven't played IHNMAIMS yet though, I will soon.

what do you mean? it's not even supposed to be a "character", you can't take the final act of the game at face value. it was perfect. the only thing that's bad imo is the voice-acting compared to the japanese VO. raiden's voice is retarded and he spouts lines like

however, you need to take into account that a lot of the lines are repeated from MGS1 (which is the point), and their delivery is toned down on purpose. the patriot AI was there from the beginning of the game
