After suffering through the insane boredom of Zestiria's and Berseria's horrid gameplay, I must say I agree.
I mean, I liked Berseria. But honestly the only reason I liked it is because I enjoyed a Tales game with an anti-hero female protagonist. Beyond Magilou I didn't like any of the other party members, the combat was horrible and the world/dungeons were laughably terrible. Zestiria was just an overall abortion.

That is pretty much my feeling towards Berseria; "It's better than Zestiria.", but it really doesn't stop the gameplay from making me want to stab myself in the eyes to make it stop. It's just bad; and the whole point of Tales is to have good gameplay to compensate the rest.

I'd still recommend it to anyone just to go through the experience of Velvet, being a degenrate faggot I am not even sold by the boobs; she simply is an interesting change of pace for a Tales MC and manages to pull it off well.

To me, Eleanor was by far the most compelling character. I loved how her righteousness changed into compassion, making her the only one I can consider a good person.
Magilou was okay, but it just seemed like they didn't finish progressing her character beyond the resolution with Melchior. I thought there would be more to her character than the clown with a dark upbringing.

Berseria is sort of your anti-thesis to Tales games; It has good writting and an anti-hero MC made purposedly to just walk around breaking tropes on purpose. But the combat and the overall world is mostly garbage tier.

Your average Tales is kind of the opposite; the combat and the world in itself is high tier, but the main character tends to be a walking cliche stepping on as many tropes as possible to purposedly instill the RPG nostalgia feeling. (Not necessarily something negative if that's your thing.)

Berseria gets carried by Velvet, whereas most other Tales tend to get carried by anything BUT the main character.

Except that's the fucking point, Jade was detached from the cares of the rest of the party and couldn't be fucked to cause drama by giving a long explanation or causing further international issues (which they were trying to prevent) by accusing the opposing country's royalty of being a replica (when the official story was that Luke was "kidnapped by Malkuth).

He comes to explicitly regret this later; it's part of his character, and also *explicitly* says that he didn't get mad for Luke getting tricked but instead for being a bitch.

If you rewatch the scene, nobody gets mad at Luke for being tricked. Nobody opens up with a "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU DO", it's only after Luke goes full crying babby mode that Jade walks away literally saying "I'm not putting up with this anymore, if I stay here I'll just have to listen to some childish rant" with everyone else piling on and following suit after Luke continued being a bitch.

Settings, and casts that are actually interesting. Dungeons that are complicated enough to be fun to explore yet pace well enough to not feel tedious. Towns that feel like actual places and not just glorified stop-n-shop spots between dungeons and cutscenes. Side quests that are involved enough to feel substantive but succinct enough to not be a waste of time. Long-running continuities in the story and not just the occasional duology. Et cetera, et cetera.

You know, back when Symphonia came out, it offered a unique enough experience to feel like the series was going somewhere. Sure, it was rough around the edges, but there was potential in the ideas it brought to the table and/or refined from past JRPGs. But then Namco went "Fuck it, we're going full sellout mode!" and decided to release way too many Tales games on way too many platforms in way too short of a timespan - most of which weren't particularly good or memorable. Thus, the series turned into niche weeb shit when it could have been a moderately successful JRPG series if Bamco weren't fucking morons.

Battle systems, skits, and anime appeal do not alone make good games.

Towns that feel like actual places and not just glorified stop-n-shop spots between dungeons and cutscenes
If there's a single game in the entire genre that isn't guilty of this, it's Abyss. Each town has its place in the world, has things it imports and exports, and you return to each multiple times (to the dismay of players who didn't like the last third of fast-traveling plot dumps) as its citizens react differently to the apocalypse. There's no single town you stop in once and never again, that doesn't have a role in the lore or which the importance isn't felt for its respective kingdom.

Side quests that are involved enough to feel substantive but succinct enough to not be a waste of time.
I'm not really massive on sidequests like other people are, but I'll give you this. That being said, there are a few gold sidequests that reveal a lot about characters, like the exchange from this post >>384461713 is from the Fonic Eyes sidequest.

I can see why people enjoy this, I myself really like Suikoden, but now that I'm older I appreciate standalone games more and hate catching up on multiple games worth of continuity just to get anywhere. It's why I'm not getting into the Trails series even as a huge JRPG fan.

That final duel was great and the final battle had top notch music. I'd say Symphonia took the edge on the duel, but Abyss easily had the better final battle sequence. Both had pretty good final bosses too.

What did you guys think of Berseria? I've been off /v/ for a while so I've missed way too many Tales threads. Wanted to see if I'm crazy for liking it so much. My only real complaints were that Velvet was OP so the game was kinda easy and the level design, especially dungeons, were still shit. One of, possibly even the best cast in the series though. We haven't had that kind of chemistry since Abyss/Vesperia. I was let down by P5 and somehow I unironically think Berseria is a better jrpg and I don't know if it or Yakuza is my current GOTY. Haven't played Nier, Zelda, or Horizon yet though.

My only gripe with Xillia 2 is how garbage most of the party members honestly are. For a returning cast, they really didn't manage to develop much into anything you'd think memorable or particularily noteworthy.

All throughout X2 I couldn't shake the vibe that the X1 cast saw Ludger's struggles as nothing more than a sidequest, which was equal parts baffling and unsettling. How nobody else cared about Fractured Milla at all. How they were so quick to accept that Ludger murdering a family member was the only way forward. I'm still not sure if it was an intentional atmosphere of unease or if it was just incompetence in party chemistry design but it sure was something I've never experienced in another JRPG.

The characters were some of the best in the series save for a couple of shit ones like Anise, the made up science was actually fairly well thought out with how it integrated with the world building, lore, and plot if you paid enough attention to it, and saying the combat was a downgrade from Symphonia is just factually untrue. Also I have no idea how you could find FoF confusing when it's so straightforward, and it actually did add to the gameplay if you learned how to use it effectively. Sunlight cores help a lot with this.

I don't know how anyone could say Abyss combat was a downgrade of Symphonia. Synphonia is stuff and awkward which makes sense being the first in 3D. Symphonia is like the most basic tales game on almost every level to me, like it excels at nothing but isn't even the best jack of all trades like Vesperia.

ToX2 feels like officially sanctioned fanfiction, which I mean in the best way possible because I really liked it.
