As of late, Warcraft's contribution has only been so so. They are creating their own races, characters, spells and creatures. I'd rather they just build from the existing lore without taking it too seriously e.g lets use some of existing characters in lore for legendary cards rather than making up stupid shit like "Reno Jackson" and "Archaeologist Rafaam".

This may change with the next expansion though. It's Scourge/Northrend related.

Admittedly, I didn't like how Pandaria introduced the whole "legendary for everyone" thing. I liked it better when only a few classes per patch could get the legendary item. There are two layers to reality in WoW, one people live in and one demons live in, the demons try to invade the humans. There are also Void Lords who exists outside of those two layers who want to consume everything, this is done by infecting the core of certain planets with Old Gods who will mature then carry out the will of the Void Lords. Again, yes and no. They've upped the chance of getting decent cards in packs, but what you get is totally random. You get daily quests (win as X, play 30 Y cards etc) and you get gold from them, which allows you to buy packs for free.

meanwhile on FFXI, they managed to fix almost every problem a party centric game with a dwindling player base could have, and created perhaps the perfect example of how to do horizontal progression, but allowing you to upgrade almost EVERYTHING from the games past, and didn't remove content "just because" like blizzard did with wow. Just about the dream expansion, so long as there's no npc or base building trash to muck it all up. I would even be fine with world quests, as long as there isn't anything resembling garrison systems or power fantasy in general. Content patches would be new islands and seafloor Naga ruins/raids. World bosses as sea monsters in the uncharted waters and King Kong on Skull Island. The ships/boats would naturally be as fast as flying mounts unless impeded by the wind (with flying mounts experiencing fatigue if they try to go on their own), and much faster than flying if the wind is in your favor. Nights would greatly shorten visibility, you would only be able to see silhouettes and the names of creatures amongst the blackness. Maps should have to be purchased, and I would go further to say they shouldn't show you your player icon, you would have to figure out where you are on your own.

Each class or spec would get one or two new abilities to accentuate their role in such an expansion. Shamans for example would be able to directly influence the weather, outlaws would have a natural affinity for pirate stuff and navigation, mistweavers could impede vision by spawning dense fog while WW would never be impeded by wind currents, druids could do some shit with the sea creatures, paladins would be effectively be lighthouses, so on, so forth.
