The United States and Russia have more nukes than they know what to do with, and no quick and efficient means to dismantle them.

Whatever value they had in the past, in the modern age, the nuclear powers would probably be happy to get rid of at least a fair chunk of them. Not necessarily all of them, but it'd be better for them to be in more manageable numbers.

All of the most powerful countries in the last 400 years have had militaristic natures. It was barely over 100 years ago that kids were worried they miss all the fun of WWI. The Americans, Russians, Germans, Japanse, British and French. They all loved a good fight until the wars got so big that if they had another one the entire world would die. Not because of small localized conflicts, it's more that people think total war is an old concept, not an almost entirely new one forged in the 19th and tempered in the 20th century.

World war 1 was absolutely insane. You have to remember that the biggest empire in the world at the time, the UK had a army the size of the army it currently has. It conducted most of its conflicts by imposition of naval power.

So Germany has been kicking this ball of an idea around for 30 years and the King of bored, and Bismarck is dead and left the ship a few decades ago anyway, and the ball is massive mobilization. Instead of a small portion of your country dedicated to a standing army you steal the concept of militas and irregulars and take it mainstream: You turn every industry, every worker into a cog in the war machine. You tell the people at home they're fighting too, and they're fighting every time they ration food (this is how rationing was sold in the UK in WWI too) or going to work in this big new factories to make shells.

This just wasn't possible in the past, but the joys of the industrial revolution, the advent of global speedy communication and freight means what took months took weeks, and the war machine is a war country, an hammer of iron and blood that came crashing down on the unsuspecting with a force that nobody had seen before and WE STILL haven't seen since in a century.

A million men were wounded or killed at the somme, that's a number we are just not going to top by conventional means. Take the corpses produced over the period and spread them on the field of the somme, and you would have 3 bodies per square metre. Of course the world seems peaceful after that, of course the 21st century seems rather nice, its still the historical equivalent of the morning after the world's biggest bar fight.

They are both a good thing AND a bad thing. Obviously, no one wants to die from radiation poisoning, it's painful, slow and you could start suffering from cancer before you die from organ failure, but thanks to nuclear devices, no one has the balls to use one to launch an attack without mutually assured destruction.

And by mutually assured destruction, I mean ONLY country capitals and military bases and nuke bases will be targeted, NOT highly populated areas. And of course, no one is going to nuke barren wastelands and deserts and places uninhabited by people.

So if a nuclear war happens, Africa and Australia wins, along with the North and South Poles, also Iceland and probably some Eastern country as well.

What is the point of the metal gear? It was always some weird tank robot that could shoot nukes from the desert, or some shit, right? But this kind of technology has been completely pointless ever since they started putting nukes on submarines and created the SSBN. The point of Metal Gear, is you played 4, is that Metal Gear is fucking nothing. Its all about the rail gun. It launches an untrackable stealth nuke that can be dropped anywhere on the planet from any other point on the planet - from a mobile platform that can defend itself from small scale attacks and fuck off if detected. In MGS4 they literally just ripped the gun off Rex, since Rex was not anything special and the gun was the only thing that mattered.

MGS1's plot revolves around the capture of Shadow Moses on the eve of another signing of nuclear disarmament with USA and Russia. Imagine if an untrackable nuke dropped on Moscow or New York City? Not only would disarmament stop, but the cold war may very well restart, if not for all out nuclear war.

It's never been about mechs. It's always been about nuclear bombs and the politics of them.

It's literally there to give it flavor. Solid Snake and Foxhound are all just spices added to an already tasty meal. It gives it that bit of kick, makes it unique.

Metal Gear Ray showed that Kojima already misunderstood his own creation, and went deeper and deeper in the hole. MGS2 was a failure of a sequel to MGS1, but a master piece in it's own regards. Ray was designed to be an "anti-Metal Gear, Metal Gear" but Metal Gears can't really survive sustained combat on their own anyways, so what's the point?

Or, I guess more simply, Kojima has ADHD and loses focus, both for better and for worse. Sometimes we get cloned super soliders and sometimes we get nanomachines.
