It's a niche genre.
I loved Condemned and the first half of Criminal Origins. Those were great examples of psychological horror, mostly because you weren't hamstrung in fighting back and the level design kept you on your toes. Most modern "psychological horror games" are little more than walking simulators with occasional jumpscares and interfacefucks.
As for sales figures, they probably make enough to recoup development costs but not enough to actually profit, unless they're somehow related to Frictional Games.
