It had to be there for the story mode and the monster itself has an interesting design.
I'd rather be able to fight it in classic than be left behind like in EO1U with the robot bosses. It takes nothing away from the actual dungeon exploration by having an extra boss and some connection between the games.

What bother me is the size of the connection. You already had connection between 1 and 2 with some small references here and there. Same thing with 3. 4 take the whole tree thing but it's still different.

In EOU2 it's the exact same shit than in EOU1 and it bring nothing interesting in term of lore. Now, every pre-apocalypse technology in Untold is probably going to be a reference to the Yggdrasil Project and this is shit.

In 1 they manage to complete the tree but not before almost every scientist on the team die, thus making the lead scientist the only survivor. He then use the tree to become immortal.

In 4 it's pretty obvious the tree wasn't developped by the same team since Etrian doesn't seems to be nearby and the tree's capacitys are so differents. The tec levels also aren't the same. The name of EO4's city is also the name of a place on Mars so maybe EO4 isn't even sets on Earth


I'm probably putting too more though on this but for me, 1 and 4 aren't part of the same exact project.

3 is the only game with zero connections to the others as far as I know, outside of occasional cameos and stuff like Armoroad Cheese/Yggdroid dolls being items in EO4.

He was alone, he was right in that. His team was dead and gone, leaving him as the lone survivor. Doesn't preclude other teams from existing though. 1, 2, and 3 were mostly standalone stories until 4 decided to link them together with stuff like describing the projects, npc dialogue, hints scattered around the game, and special items that explicitly name the other towns/cities.
Which I think is the best way to link them, not by a ton of exposition, just cues that only an observant player who has played the others would notice.

Just a dumb little "what if" drawn for an art book. They clearly didn't even have real plans for a third Untold, considering we haven't heard about one yet.

Also I don't get what the hooplah about 2U's YggCore is. Although EO1's story technically ended with Etreant, you could go and beat up the monstrous Primevil, core of the labyrinth as the super final final boss, and it was established right then and there that the tree's core had mutated into that shit. Then EO2 had another tree but the story went in a different direction and never really had to explain jack shit about why the tree was there, just that the heroes used it to climb up into Laputa. 2U just went with the logical conclusion that it was another earth-purifying tech tree with another corrupted core, and tied that into the story mode while also allowing classic mode players to go beat it up.

I like the 2nd core, it's a great monster design that feels in line with Primevil, and the battle is fun and multisegmented due to the Odium and Irae. It's also just more content gameplay wise, which is always good if it isn't locked behind story mode.
