interesting interview with Davide Soliani

>"When the game leaks, no one is happy," Soliani says. "Also, let's be honest, the reaction at the beginning was not 'sceptical' - it was a little bit worse than that. It was quite hard on the team morale to read some of those comments. I asked for Grant's opinion, [since he] has way more experience than me. 'Do you think they will love it? Do you think they will hate us? Do you think that we've done everything wrong?' I was very, very worried. Because, you know, people on the internet can be very, very, very harsh."

>Grant continues: "Davide was completely panicking. I kept saying to him not to worry and that everyone was going to love it."

>That's why Soliani had warned his team to prepare for the worst at E3. His best hope, he tells us, was that someone would think, "It's OK for a strategy game". A good result would be to come away with one E3 Award nomination.

>Yet from the moment Miyamoto took to the stage, it became clear that Soliani need not have feared. The reception was strong, and when the Nintendo legend called out Soliani's name on stage, the camera panned towards the tearful Ubisoft creator.

poor Davide ;-;

>>
>>384402760
The real mistake is the idiot at Ubisoft who thought they were actual 'leakers' when all they do is pull predictions out of their ass and gave him the shit.

Although I really think the leak was actually a positive thing because it allowed people time to digest what it was, because if Ubisoft unveiled it out of the blue, people would probably give a lot more knee jerk and negative reaction even with Miyamoto on stage giving it his full throated support. Either way, it must have been hell to be able to work with a legendary IP that you worship, and then find out everyone is shit talking it without even knowing what the gameplay is.

Another great point is the Director of X com was asked about his opinion and his first thought was 'Shit, if I knew they were developing this I would have pitched the idea to Nintendo.' And he believes a rising tide lifts all boats and likes what he sees about battle kingdom.

>"I was amazed by the player reaction. We had a queue that was six hours long, and at the end of the waiting time, they were still happy. That was the best reward we could have received. >>
>"Yeah... my Miyamoto story is a bit worse," he admits. "It was when E3 had moved to Atlanta [1997]. Nintendo had a party in a museum, and we all got hideously drunk. I saw [Rare founder] Tim Stamper talking to Miyamoto, and I introduced myself as the composer of Banjo-Kazooie, totally drunk. He just looked at me with the blankest expression, he couldn't tell what I was saying. A while later, I was in the bathroom - and this is embarrassing - I was trying to pull down [Donkey Kong 64 designer] George Andreas' trousers for a joke. I was on my knees and I looked up to see Miyamoto staring down at me. That was the last time I spoke to him."

I loved X-Com games and will be glad to play this. I'm going to rent it through Gamefly, though, since I can't justify $60 for 20 hours of gameplay.
>>
>>384411812
I think it would have been more of an impact if no one actually know what was going on beforehand. It would have been a perfect one-two punch. The initial shock of a rabbids and Mario game in the first five minute. And then with everyone still surprised, wow them with the x-com gameplay and colorful aesthetics.
>>
>>384411349
I wonder if people have sent emails apologizing for being cynical towards the game before the E3 conference.
>>384411184
Kinda surprised as well. I guess Davide's enthusiasm and passion really was captivating to convince Miyamoto.

>>
>>384412054
Perhaps. It's a weird mix that takes a bit to fully wrap your head around so I don't think it was negative to have rumors beforehand. Honestly, what matters is that the reception was so positive. Davide's enthusiasm does show in the interview, and despise us making fun of the crying dev, I'm happy for him.
>>
>>384412123
Miyamoto, and by extension Nintendo, doesn't really care too much if their characters are put in non-family friendly situations. It's whether or not the people involved actually put in genuine effort into making it good or not. If anyone else just wanted Mario with a gun for a quick cash grab, they would have rejected it, but as with Ubisoft, they actually want to make a fun game, they said yes despite knowing it would involve Mario with a gun.
>>
>>384411583

>>384404220
Hell even more so he said he was happy for it since he can play an X-Com game with his kid. You might be right about giving us time to digest the idea of Rabbids. Actually reading his twitter he sounded like he was going die of having his heart broken with all the anger people have it. Happy everything worked out for him since he seem to put way too much heart for a Rabbid game.
