I was going to post this. The last time I was savescumming for the hell of it, I decided to try to go for the Trident, and my first kill was a rat. I had to venture down to something like level 190 of the dungeon to get a chance to kill whatshisface.

For those who don't know, the ultimate ending of the game requires you to kill a monster that spawns on the level equivalent to the amount of kills you have of the type of your first kill.

I guess that could be considered infinite as well. I think it has finite depth, but because entering stairs generates a new dungeon at that level (which, thematically, I understood to represent another part of that level, connected by a maze of staircases).

What always got me about Ragnarok Online's dunegons is how the old ones like Glast Heim had so many superfluous rooms with absolutely nothing of interest in them.
Like, if you manage to find the route all the way to Dungeon 2, your reward is an ever so slightly better spot to level up.
There's no boss down there, there's no treasure down there, the monsters don't drop anything interesting.
It, and the 4 or so fields leading up to it are basically just one gigantic dead end.

They fixed this in their later dungeon design by putting the MvP boss monsters in the furthest in room in their dungeons instead of right in the fucking center, but in those early dungeons I still feel like they really should have incentivized exploration more somehow.

Back then you had to stop every other pull for mana, to eat, to heal up. I specifically recall a run in full T2 still taking about 45min to get from entrance to throne room with our tank pulling decent pulls.

It just wasn't for me. It just felt so damn dull. Then I went over a friend's house and watched them do one of the dungeons inside one of those big ass domes, and holy fuck what a bore.

I was really disappointed. The game's aesthetic and design were charming as all fuck, and some of the areas truly drew me in, but god fucking dammit. Between the shit-ass launcher, the inability to play at decent resolutions / mandatory controller controls, and the time I had to go through my bank and block sub fees because their customer support wouldn't help me unsub at the time, it was just not for me.

If you were skipping everything, sure. Typically, people only did that to get to the MC attunement, or to just skip everything and go straight to the throne room. We had to drag people through occasionally for FR gear, which wasn't terrible, but full clears still took about 2 hours.

Running UBRS for FR gear was sort of more efficient because it was shorter, but BRD had some decent FR pieces in there.

So you're stuck in a game with huge dungeons, lack of access to a permanent map, there are dangerous enemies everywhere (some of which can insta-kill you or steal gear), lots of puzzles/hidden doors, roaming FOEs (that are genuine threats) with rare drops and special abilities that can be lost if you kill them, traps that can seriously fuck you over, AND if a character dies they can be permanently destroyed if they're too old or the resurecction fails. And this is considered casual by Wizardry fans.
