Bethesda should try moving back to directional swings like in Daggerfall and Morrowind. I'd hope for a system more similar to games like Mount and Blade where you have directional swinging and then directional parrying/blocking to make the combat a bit more engaging, add limb based damage and the gameplay would feel vastly more dynamic. You wouldn't even need a dedicated dodge button of any sort really, just have the skills you gain determine the amount of stagger/damage strikes cause to opponents and how much damage you receive while parrying or add the stagger to blocking. Successful directional parries with stagger an opponent letting you kill them easily, and it could even be like the default parry in Mount and Blade in which when you simply press the parry button when you see the direction an enemy is swinging you automatically block in that direction so you don't have to counter-swing.

And then the combat would just lack a parrying mechanic with enemies that it would be harder to implement with like bears, wolves, etc. It would just resort back to what we have currently which is a standard parry/blocks that covers all attacks no matter the direction is directional attacks are difficult to do for a certain enemy type.

The problem is that system would be next to impossible to implement into consoles well and TES is now made for consoles first and PCs second.

At least its better than Morrowind where two handers had the same range as some daggers. Spears were broken with reach advantage though, you could just backpedal and stab your way through the entire game as a weak character with enough fatigue potions and you would be fine in almost every scenario.

I've started more than 20 new Skyrim playthroughs since 2011. I've easily spent 300+ hours just modding and testing mods. I still haven't finished the Dragonborn DLC and probably never will because I'll get the urge to mod and eventually break my save installing and uninstalling and reinstalling mods. Mods are a blessing and a curse, some part of me wishes I only played Skyrim on 360 so I would have no choice but play the game through to the end and beat the DLC. I might pickup Skyrim SE for PS4 just for that reason while I still continue to use Skyrim on PC as a mod playground.

Chivalry works fine on console and it has a similar combat system. I hope the next TES takes some major notes from the success of Souls core combat, not saying they should copypaste, just use take some inspiration and at least add proper, attack recovery, poise, spacing and parrying, and a dedicated fucking dodge / side step button for gods sake.

I think the only reason they don't want a dedicated dodge button is because they base the game around first person first and then do everything in third person. I like TES as a first person game, I switch to third person sometimes but not often enough. Rolling and dodging in first person would either look weird, be hard to find where you are rolling, or just be extremely disorientating. That's why I didn't suggest it as much as I would like one as well.

Yeah again all that TES6 really needs is just some of the stuff from previous games. Armor segmenting, more skill trees, and much more interesting writing/world building and it would probably be the best in the series.

The combat is better imo than Oblivion and Morrowind and the leveling system works better with the idea of leveling skills through use rather than gaining XP. While I didn't like the idea initially of not creating a class, I realized you do create a class but you create it through gameplay rather than through a character creation screen. You become a sword and board knight by using sword and board skills not by selecting it at the start of the game. I guess all it lacks is the creative labeling you can give your class/character but that could hopefully be resolved with a reworking of factions or adding knighthoods or orders of certain types.

There's a little hope it'll be good because of the success of Witcher 3 and Dark Souls. Even the masses of normies now wouldn't accept such shitty melee combat from a new TES, even fallout 4 despite being a shitty game managed to have much better gunplay than previous games, I have hopes that the next TES will at least have better combat but can't say what other aspects might be even more streamlined than Skyrim.

Where in Morrowind you'd get artifacts that have enough effects to make it look like a Diablo legendary, in Skyrim you only have "does fire damage" or "absorb stamina" or similarly boring stuff. The game is balanced around these underwhelming effects, so if you stack too many of them to make legendary weapons good, they'd get way too good.

Yeah, Hammerfell is the logical place to go. You can mimic Dragonborn, do a lot of minorities/virtual signaling with Redguards, dwemer ruins makes sense there and also, resistence against High Elves domination is a viable narrative.
